There was a post about this on the other board where someone ordered a metal impeller from a place that makes them to replace the plastic ones.

Not a gen2 guy but I like to read up on some of the solutions people find as one day they may be applicable.

That's me :)

I'll post some pictures here to when it comes in (probably another 3 weeks or so). I have a Cardone unit on there that I just don't trust. I could tell it was a cheap rebuild when I put it on, mainly because it took them 6 tries to send me one (bought on rock auto) that had the mating surfaces machined (looked like it was rough casted still). I've heard a lot about them failing fast where others have said they lasted for them. I kept my OE pump and figured since I'm having to do my timing cover gasket to fix a leak it was the right time to rebuild the OE one.

Good and bad news on it.

Good - They had already done a Viper before so they had the cad files already so I didn't have to pay for that R&R.
Good - It's an aluminum impeller so no risk of it breaking or melting like the 2000+ OE units and the Cardone ones.
Bad - Just being a cheap ass.... It's $300 to have rebuilt not including shipping so I'll probably have about $350 in the rebuild so I could have bought a NOS one for a little more ($400) but I decided on this option due to the metal impeller.

Any update?
Ah Damn, I completely forgot to update here.

The pump came in and was really nice. No leaks and the car seems to run cooler but we also haven't hit the summer months yet. I also went back to a brass radiator at the same time so any differences in temperature could be part of that as well. I believe the company stopped building them temporarily as they didn't have a reliable builder anymore (mine took 6+ months to get built). Overall I would 100% recommend it if they found a reliable builder and could turn them around in a reasonable amount of time.

Here are some pics of the pump:

Thanks for the response. I thought that I had read a post somewhere by a person who just got the impeller itself from FlowKooler, and then had his pump rebuilt somewhere else, after they couldn't do it. I was hoping that was you, and could confirm. However, it looks like you are the original person who tried to go this route. Too bad that it hasn't turned into a regular product from them yet. Were you ever told what the rebuild difficulty was? It sounds like it was not an issue with making the impeller itself.

You saw that on fb. Want to do a group buy on the impeller.

I'll buy 3. Flowcooler do not rebuild pumps anymore. They will sell impellers though

They told me the problem was just sourcing someone that could rebuild things properly. The person they used to use to build them was out with Covid for a very long time and then I assume that person just retired or stopped working as the feedback to me went from "our builder is still out ill" to "we haven't found a quality builder yet". They confirmed they had all the parts months before my pump was built.

I honestly thought they were BSing me for a couple of those months and was about to demand my pump back when it finally shipped. Literally the day I called to say "just give me my stuff back so I can at least use it as a core" they said it was ready to ship. I think they were actually being honest with me as a week after mine shipped out they put a notice out their that they were no longer accepting pumps to be built.

It doesn't seem like rocket science to build a pump but I'm sure it takes a lot of attention to detail to get right. I actually applaud them for not sending out something they weren't confident in and holding off until they could get it done right. I assume they still have a couple of builders on staff but not enough for these one off types of builds and they are focusing on the more routine stuff.

Getting the impeller buy itself would be great as it removes the worst part of the OE pumps. If you can source the gaskets, seals and bearing though is another question... Would be awesome if they sold a kit that included all that and you just built it. Obviously no warranty on leaking though but you could have a local machine shop built it for you, I'd assume.

I had just finished replacing in the inner tie rods when I found a pool of coolant under the car... This car breaks as soon as it's fixed.

Anyway, I need a water pump as well. I couldn't find a replacement anywhere, so I need to find a place that will rebuild it? Or 3D print a new one?

Seems like I saw a thread at VOA or FB the other day about an ACR-X wp needing replacement. Conversation included a reference to a manufacturer that was almost done gearing up for this, to include other years of Viper.

Any water pump rebuild updates or sources? Mine's been weeping for a while. I just pulled the pump off my '98 spares car, cleaned it up and it should work for a while, but looking to rebuild the OE shortly thereafter.

That sounds more like what I'm interested in. Mike scares me sometimes...

An automotive water pump can't be that mysterious - a shaft, bearing(s), a seal and an impeller. We rebuild Berkeley centrifugal water pumps all the time. The main question I have is whether the impeller is pressed on the shaft, or LH threaded. The hub insert looks a bit like the ones used in the OE power steering pulleys that crack out over time. The impeller is a "back plate" design and the vanes clear the housing by 0.030". It's a bit more efficient than the kind Mike has on his. However, if the car runs, efficiency isn't normally a big issue unless you're tracking it hard like me.
