I twisted the passenger halfshaft tonight to resemble a licorice stick.. I thought my tire blew out initially. When I looked under the car, the halfshaft twisted to the point where the splines separated from the wheel. Pretty crazy stuff considering I am running a stock motor. Any input on what new halfshafts run or should I just upgrade to beefier halfshafts? (anyone have em for sale?)
Another thing, how difficult is it to change out the halfshaft?
Thnx..

funny you should ask, i went through the process last week. the half shafts take 4 bolts a piece to remove. nothing major, did it on the floor of my garage under a jack. i would go with Unitrax, the heavy duty run 800ish, and the titanium are 1200ish.

Consider yourself lucky! I know MANY guys who lost a halfshaft and it took out their differential housing. The bright side is you didn't, and can now get beefier halfshafts. You should be able to get stock shafts cheap, since so many upgrade there is a surplus of used stockers on the market.

Any decent driveshaft shop will be able to re-tube your stocker. They can probably up the wall thickness at the same time. This can most likely be done for less than buying a takeoff, with faster turnaround. These things are not magic.

Gonna give my local dodge dealer a ring on monday.. See if this is covered under warranty, if not, who has a set of gen II stocker halfshafts for sale?? Worst case i will either buy a set of upgrades or go with GTS Dean's idea of getting a driveline shop to retube em.

The stock halfshafts list for $900 each (totally rediculious).
Which warranty you have will decide if it's covered under warranty, 3 year/ 36K original, or an extended warranty (there are several versions of the extended).

I twisted one on my 94, it was covered under the Added Care Plus warranty ($50 deductible).
I ended up with the twisted one and had it re-tubed for about $60-70 dollars if I remember right.

I bought the BTR halfshafts for my 97 GTS, with shipping about $700.

Good Luck!

wheeeeeeeeeww, nasty. Would the car drive at all? I assume it seperated from the wheel as it pulled away.

You're not kidding about 'twisted'. I thought a twisted half-shaft would start to twist and then just tear in half, but apparently not!

Classic torsional failure of a thin walled tube. That's just what it's supposed to do. Get it re-tubed and you'll have a good spare.
