Are the stock speakers Alpine? If so, what are they comparable to on the current market from Alpine? I want to replace the speakers, but if they are top end speakers ($399 retail at goodguys)(they don't sound like them), then I don't want to replace them with cheaper one's. Anybody know if there is a specific model or series in our car's?

thanks,
Chan

I dont know what model they are or what they are comparable to, but I do know even a set of $200 components will MAJORLY outperform the stock crap. The stock speakers are the same crap they put in minivans and stuff - not good at all.

Great question, I too would like to bump my stock 2000 GTS sound system up a bit for under $500. Thanks for asking Chan, I will make this a favorite thread. Gary

My wife's 1999 Chrysler Town & County minivan's speakers sound better than the Viper's. My 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck's speakers sound much better than my wife's minivan.

they stink, trash em. replace them with 6.5 MB quart or JL components. yes, 6.5 will fit just perfect with only a slight bit of mod to the ports.

Is the factory amp ok with this setup?

The factory speakers and amp are unfortunately quality which reflects that the lowest bidder got the order. The factory speakers are paper cones, similar to the ones used in the cheapest of dodges vehicles and they sound like crap if you ask me.

Replace with MB Quart, Kicker or whoever else your favourite brand is. I used the Kicker 525 because the fit drop in into the factory ports without additional drilling etc.

For amp i went with a 4 channel alpine and i bridged channel 3 & 4 to a single channel for the center mounted mid bass speaker (i installed the mid bass myself). For deep bass i am in the works to install a custom subwoofer in the passenger footwell powered by it's own amp.

I got a new head while i was at it, mp3 and all the other goodies... :thumb:

I used www.etronics.com and www.crutchfield.com for my purchases (electronics from etronics and speakers from crutchfield).

I ran new speaker and signal cables while i was at it, but i went to a high end audio shop and had them do it because routing the cables was quite a bit of work (took them close to 8 hours to do a good job).

wow, great info. k, few questions to ur responses. so i can NOT fit a 6.5" up front? and only a 5.25"? this is what a buddy of mine is willing to do for me. tell me if this is a good deal. it will be around $300-325. what he's gonna do is do a Focal set up front, says retails for like $400 and he can get it for me at dealer cost for about $175. then he wants to do a Ample subwoofer, (never heard of the company) for $79. I have a Alpine unit that a dvd and navigation already and a Nakamichi amp. Im leaving the head unit and replacing the amp with a Zapco Z400. He's gonna enclose the box in fiberglass and make it fit (he said very nicely) in the pass. rear of the car. He said he won't be making any money off this set up and that it will sound pretty nice. I think for the money, that's not bad, only concern is the Ample sub and going with the step down Focal's (160 V2's). What do u all think?

thanks,
chan

also, does anybody have any pics of a sub in the passenger footwell???

In the doors you have to use 5.25" if you want to use the stock location and not change anything.
I think the speaker between the seats is a 6.5" speaker. I replaced it with a kicker mid-bass driver.

I chose kicker because i got a great deal. But if you are looking for the supreme sound, you should probably check out MB Quart. I've heard that they sound really awesome. with your nakamichi amp and high-end head unit it seems like you shouldn't be cheap on either the amp or the speakers.

I've heard good things about focal speakers, but the price ($300-325) seems a bit high. Perhaps i misunderstood what you get for your money but if that's just the full range speakers, then that's pretty expensive imho...

I've never heard about an ample subwoofer. Doesn't mean that they aren't good, but i tend to be suspicious about things i've never heard or seen elsewhere. I also question if you get any subwoofer of value if it's costing only $79...

MB Quarts also drop in without drilling (at least in a 2001).

I think they were 5.25's (I'm referring to the door speakers BTW).

For a budget of $500 or less, should I replace only the speakers and retain the stock wiring? I don't need to go crazy on expenditures, but I do want a bit more volume and clearer sound. TY everyone, Viper Alley is great /images/graemlins/applause.gif

-Top end speakers at "Good Guys"? You would take your Viper to good guys, and let those monkeys put their junky stuff in it?

6.5 DO fit in doors it only takes a very slight bit of mod to the port and even the grills fit flush, ive done it on two cars. JL audio type speakers used. also, MB quarts will fit as well, you cant just drop em in but like i said a slight bit of mod to the port diameter and its a factory look as neat as OEM.

as for the factory amp toss it with the factory speakers. depending upon what you paln on using, a 300x4 would suffice but i would recommend two sep amps one driving the sub by itself. as for subs, JL audio 6W0 will fit like factory in the rear bulkhead, just remember to enclose it wll with silicone/fiberglass so as to tighten up that hit. or, an easier way; make a rear bulkhead panel custom fiberglass mold (the entire thing) and do so with either a 8" or 10" sub capacity port, an 8" cap port will only extend out into cockpit aprox 3/4" more than OEM so its not even noticable and the sound is without a doubt superior. many still liek to passenger footwell, me; nah too ghetto and i like a stealth system, one that loooks liek it came with the bucket until you turn it up and then everyone knows it aint stock, LOL

also, FWIW; remove spare tire and custom the trunk, easy place to get creative to mount the amp(s) and crossovers

i put the head units brains and also I mounted a 40gig hardrive under the seats.
