So are Z06\'s really better handling cars

I have noticed that just about every Z06 vs. Viper feud on corvette sites ends up in "yes, vipers are faster, but put the two on the twisties and watch the vette runaway from the viper." Is this true, and if so, what is it about the Z06 that makes it better handling and why is the viper so "bad" at it?

Ban him! Start a poll!
Re: So are Z06\'s really better handling cars

Well...let look at the facts:

FACT: 2002 Dodge Viper GTS Dry Surface Max. Lateral G = 1.01G

FACT: 2002 Chevy Corvette Z06 Dry Surface Max. Lateral G = 0.99G

You decide!

Vette are easier to drive fast. Vipers are alittle faster bit take a better skilled driver to drive them fast. Vettes are also more forgiving should you make a mistake..
Re: So are Z06\'s really better handling cars

Here is a link to a page that adresses this very thing on the Corvete board. I have done a bunch of posts on this topic giving results of my personal experiences of Viper vs Z06 and they just keep saying they never lose to a Viper and how much better bang for the buck the Z06 is.

So go there and read my posts and you will see that you cannot tell those guys anything true about the Z06/Viper argument because they know it all! Paolo
Re: So are Z06\'s really better handling cars

Well if they can't say that a Vette is better handling, then what can they say - Vipers are uncomfortable? Vipers stereos suck (well this one they are right with). So there you go Vetter owners, your Z06 has a better stereo than the Viper, congrats.
Re: So are Z06\'s really better handling cars

with the way you went over to the Vette forum with a chip on your shoulder, what type of reaction did you expect ??
Re: So are Z06\'s really better handling cars

WHOA, i never said anything about the Z06 BEING a better handling car. The viper is my favorite car by far, Trey can vouch for me on that one. I just like to visit other car forums, and I was just simply stating that I have read many statements by Z06 owners making comments on how the Z06 is a better handling car than the viper and wanted to know if this was a true statement. Dont ban me, I was just asking for some input on why these Z06 owners always make this handling statement.
Re: So are Z06\'s really better handling cars

The Z06 has a cup holder. What else is there to say?

Okay, seriously... The viper can come up and scare the shit out of any driver. My personal experience was that out of all the different cars i have had such as sporty bimmers, Peugot 405 Mi16 and cars that i have driven (formula ford, porches and a couple of pasta racers) the viper can be downright scare before you are used to it. It took me a while to trust the stickiness of the tires and to learn how to handle understeer/oversteer as weight transfers happened in the twisties. Now i found that a Z06 is a bit more forgiving (i haven't really had any extensive time in a Z06), but it doesn't allow you to go to the all out extreme topspeeds as the viper does (albeit in the viper you have to learn how to get there -there are no freebies).

It's sort of the same as with motorcycles. The sport touring bikes goes pretty fast, but the all out racebikes will outperform them assuming that the driver is capable of pushing a race bike to the limit.

I'm not claiming to be a very good viper driver, but i have been known to push it on occasion /images/graemlins/smile.gif
Nothing will make you as happy as the feeling of torque when you leave a Z06 behind coming out of the twisties (you know that at 0-100 a Z06 is a football field behind when it hits 100 according to C&D).

One more thing,

if i seriously wanted a car just for the twisties i'd get a Lotus Elise. $30-40K gives you a lightweight (1,600lbs) car with a 200hp engine that begs for some aftermarket mods.
Re: So are Z06\'s really better handling cars

Yes they are! A corvette can do NO wrong!

uh.....

lay off the drugs please. kthxbye
Re: So are Z06\'s really better handling cars

As was already stated, simply look at the ratings of the Viper in both lateral g's and the slalom (ACR). The Viper (ACR) is first, the Porsche TT is next, and the ZO6 comes in behind that.

On a autox course, the ZO6 may have a slight edge, cause its lighter and the Viper can be a handful especially on a tight course. On a racetrack, the Viper will always win, given decent driver skill. However, the Viper is one tough car to drive near its limits. The ZO6 is not, especially with the driver aids left on.

The bang-for-the-buck argument is silly, as it all depends on your budget and tastes.

To elaborate...those with good taste drive vipers...and those with none do not! :thumb:
Re: So are Z06\'s really better handling cars

Thanx for the input, somehow I knew a bowtie couldnt be THAT impressive on the twisties.

/images/graemlins/laughing.gifAh guys, someone had to start this topic, didn't they!
If you read the mags, most say that the Z06 handles better than the Viper. If you follow SCCA T-1 at all, most guys choice of weapons have been the Z06 with T-1 mods. Archer and the lady dentist seem to be the only real contenders pushing a Viper along the track. Now the Viper does have a slight air restrictor to even things up a little on the top end.... but most races are won in and exiting the corners..soooooooo draw your own conclusions.., ;)

Then again using the logic that whatever the masses are using must be the best -a beetle is the best car in the world. Way over 10 million produced using the same design without any changes to the basic design. You draw your own conclusions...
