openroad i WANT to run 160. we'll see
Ditto that. I will for sure be there and will see where I qualify. I KNOW it will be 140+, but hoping for around 160 MPH.

What are RT/10's with rollbars limited to? I might have to bring the GTS.

your also limited by experience. first time so i know they wont let me go above 160 tech speed. remember though you cannot go less than 30mph under tech speed at anytime as well so the window for 160 is 130-160 and that includes the turns, curves and the narrows /images/graemlins/supergrin.gif

If anyone is interested in a video clip of the Nevada ORC, please PM me. I will give you the link so you can download it.

This is a very well produced video clip of the JUN 850HP 350Z involved in an enormous crash at the Silver State. Spoke in Japanese, can't understand a thing.

It is 18 meg. If you are considering the race, you might want to look at this for safety concerns.

You may need all the codecs because it is DIVx. Not sure where/how to get them.

This clip looks beautiful and gives a great representation of the road.

Don't want to get anyone upset about this not being a Viper, but it is valuble to look at considering the quality and crash dynamics.

I believe they blew a tire at well over 200mph.

How do they monitor this?

They run radar out there to check speeds at several points on the course. If you run 30 mph under your tech speed then you are going to get passed by a lot of cars and the word will get around that you need to be in a slower class.

They run these races several times a year, so you dont have to go out and hit a big number your first time out. Hwy. 318 is a fairly easy road to drive fast but there are a few parts that can surprise you. And it only takes one surprise to kill you. So take your time, have fun and maybe be a bit conservative for the first time out. You can always go faster at the following race. If you guys go to these events be sure to listen to the instructors and veteran racers of these events. Their knowledge and suggestions could save your life.

Good call. I'll drop down in speed then. I guess I won't know until I am actually out there.

What seems to be the most common issues at these races? Do cars overheat, tires go out, or what?

I suggest that you visually inspect every part of your tires before you race. And you should run them at the maximum cold tire pressure. Tire failures are one of the main things that can kill you at these races.

if i end up doing this i figured it best to just buy a new set for this event (what with prices so damn cheap anyway) just to be safe

Amen, I agree! My tires looks fine, but I did road course them one day and went off track and had gravel and bits wedged between the rim and the tire.

Any reason one shouldn't go out on the 19 inch purners with the 19" Michelins? I heard they are a good combo for high speed runs -- I believe West Coast Viper used it on their 1 mile shootout car last year.

I dont see any reason not to run 19 in. Pilots. The rear tires are 1.5 in. taller than the 18's - so just make sure you are not going to have a problem with the tire rubbing inside the fender well.

Also, I highly suggest that any pimp wings, splitters, etc. not be used for this event. For example, a wing will increase rear downforce which will add more force on the rear tires which can add heat to the tire and cause the tire to fail. Pimp-aero parts are nice for car shows and all that, but not knowing what their effects are on your car and tires at 170 mph for an extended time frame could prove to be a very dangerous experiment.

The car I plan to run has an adjustable wing, so I can zero it out. It does have a mild front splitter though. I would assume that is a good thing to have when coming over slight hills and what not at triple digit speed, no?

My buddy saw this video on some show and he confirmed it was a tire blow out. Amazingly, the guy walks away with what looks like no injuries -- I would attribute it to the roll cage he had in that 350Z. I'm curious why that car tire blew though. From what I was told, that car was a specially prepared car for that event and had some 6 digit dollars invested into it. You think it was just the fact that the tire didn't hold up to the centrifical force or they heated up so much that they just blew?

Those of you that live in Vegas, is May when it starts getting hellishly hot, or is that not until June?

Manny
