I was just wondering how hot your cars get if you get stuck in traffic in the middle of the afternoon 90+.
The reason I ask is because, today I got stuck for about 1 hour so while I was sitting there with the AC blasting, I noticed the temp got up to about 230-240. It was pretty close to the red line, so I promptly turned off the AC and crossed my finger. Luckly the traffic started to move, and once I got going the temp returned to 180. Is this the norm, or does anyone think that I might have a problem. Another thing I noticed, the oil pressure was down to 20psi at idle, but once the revs came up it returned to 40-50.
I hope I am just paranoid, any thoughts on the matter. thanks

There's a good thread with a lot of information about this in Anything Goes. TT VS. SUPER CHARGERS. I've been in your exact situation before and my Viper overheated. Had to turn off the AC & turn the heat on in the 100 degree Texas heat to try and make the temps go down. Vipers (with serious mods) & traffic just don't mix. I doubt there's anything wrong with your Viper though. That's normal.

My car used to get to 225+ with the HUGE intercooler in the front of the car. Although it never overheated, it ran hotter than I preferrred. Oil pressure on my car is also around 20 psi but im running low viscocity oil from when the oil was changed in MD during the winter (time for an oil change). Heffner changed the intercooler and made some other changes to minimize HP losses free of charge. With the smaller intercooler my car sits at around 210 in traffic no matter what the temp is outside. With the cooling system mods my car runs as cold as 170 in 90 degree heat on the freeway. Im tempted to say my car runs cooler than a stock viper.

When I was on the freeway, or rolling, I never had any problems at all. 170 was normal for me too. But no matter what we did, I always had problems in traffic. I changed my radiator, t-stat, water wetter/coolant, the perpellar in the water pump, pulley, burped it to make sure no bubbles were in the lines, you name it, we tried it. It got to the point where I couldn't even enjoy the car in the summer time. Because of the fact that if I was in traffic I had to turn off the AC and pray I wouldn't overheat. Well it gets incredibly hot in Texas & the Viper is hot already. The temps would go straight to the red. Depending on how long I'd sit. The AC would start to blow hot air. And everybody knows, when the AC starts to blow hot, you better pull over because we all know what's next. I definitely want to ride in your car next summer in traffic. And what cooling system mods do you have?

My cooling system is pretty robust. I have a Ron Davis Aluminum Radiator. I have an overdriven waterpump with a billet impeller, Modified 160 degree t-stat, water wetter, relocated oil cooler, extra fans, and....:ugh: silicone radiator hoses

160 t-stat? do u find it works better than a 180? what type of fans you running?
Im not sure it made a difference at all. Im not sure which one of the mods made the biggest difference, but I do know that the combo I have now does work. My main fan is the stock unit. I am running some auxillary fans, that I dont know the name of.

Smoking, I wish mine stayed at around 210, that's pretty accaptable, but 230-240 /images/graemlins/cry.gif /images/graemlins/cry.gif. I guss I need to try out an upgraded water pump, and the Water Wetter. Hopefully those would help.
Thanks for the info guys..

Many times it is not related to the components within the system...ie radiator, fans, t-stat...when it could be design concern. Once you begin modifying the Viper, the efficiency of the cooling system goes down hill..no matter what components are utilized.

On SC or turbo apps where a large single intercooler is used (no matter the car)you see a stacking of heat exchangers which puts even more load on the radiator which is the last in line in terms of receiving air flow at the front of the car.

The intercooler, AC condenser, and THEN the radiator all compete for incoming air....and the radiator will suffer no matter the size or efficiency rating of the core.

Jason I think I'm gonna try the water pump you bought this time around. Also where did you buy your auxillary fans? I think that just may be the key to your cooling success. How many extra fans do you have & how'd they "fit"?

I have one extra fan mounted in front of the radiator that is ALWAYS RUNNING as long as the ignition is on. It fits pretty good, I think you COULD fit two if you wanted to, but Heffner put it in for me when my car was there.

No, its quite a bit smaller, Im not sure what kind or if its necessary since Redsnake's car doesnt use one and is fine. Im sure each of the cooling system mods helps some nominal amount, but Im just not sure how much.

Thanks Jason. If you have time could you PM me the name of the fan Heffner added & where he got it. Maybe he even sells them?? This is the one thing I've never tried and I have a funny feeling this is what's gonna work best. I've had the same overheating/hot problem with every Viper so far. Thanks!

Trey I really dont know what fan he put in. I just see it there. I didnt ask him to put it in, was done as part of the package. You might want to call Jason Heffner, or I can talk to him and find out.
