Ok this is somewhat of a silly question, but here it is.

Do any of you guys that own vipers make around 40k a year? I'm graduating college this month and I've been working for 6 to 7 years but i'm switching jobs and am getting a position that is starting at that. The reason i'm asking is i've worked out the numbers and it's actually really affordable to get a 98 or 99 viper but I feel like the car is almost out of my league. I already own my own house so i've got all the priorities in order, but i'm just currious if this would be extremely rare for a guy in his early 20's to own a viper, making this kinda salary. Usually when i think of a viper owner I think of an extremely wealthy older guy, just currious what the scene is here.

Basically i guess the better question is are there alot of maintenance things to worry about with a 98 or 99 viper, or anything else i'm not considering?

Also please don't make me rationalize out my life and what i've accomplished and what kinda funding I have, I've busted my ass for everything I have in life on parent is dead and my other has nothing to do with me in a financial aspect. I have read alot of your guy's posts and see you love to flame people. If you don't want to add anything of value please simply don't reply it's an amazing concept.

I'd only get one if I had a beater car or something else to drive everyday.

Re: Salary Poll

If you think you can afford it do it. You have insurance, gas, and etc so just keep that in mind. Shit finance it for 7 years if ya want. You only live once and you could walk outside today and get smoked by a car and never know what it is like to drive a viper......

Re: Salary Poll

I bought my first viper at 23 and my second at 24. I don't think that age is an issue as long as you have some driving experience, preferably with high performance cars. Don't be a jackass with the car either. I can only imagine what 99% of teenagers would do to a viper in the first week.

As for buying one while making 40k. I don't know what the living expenses are like where you live buy I can't imagine having a viper in LA while makeing 40k. Don't get yourself in financial trouble because of a car.

Re: Salary Poll

Yea I rent out two rooms in my house so my living expenses are litterally nothing. /images/graemlins/smiles I'm fixing to buy a bigger house so i'm calculating even 500-600 a month for living expenses because of getting a larger house, but i'm going to run the numbers time and time again before I would do this, What about maintenance on a 98 or a 99 with 20k miles?

It's good that you're asking, but you're question is just a plain basic "what can I afford" question. You'd do yourself a great service by sitting down and examining your REAL daily/monthly/annual expenses (if you're not already, buy and use Quicken). You can virtually afford any car if you finance it long enough. The problem is that for the entire length of that financing, you will likely not be able to afford any other "extraneous fun items" unless you are able to increase the income side of the equation. 7 years may be a VERY long time for some folks to "hold back". Betting/banking on more future income is how people find themselves in bankruptcy proceedings.

IMO, a Viper should definitely NOT be the first large expense item for a graduating college senior. But that's MO and it's based on MY experiences and MY level of maturity when I was 21. Not to be a downer, but have you considered saving that extra money for a few years?

Re: Salary Poll

Well, if you are going to drive it only on the weekends, then maint. cost is very minimal. But I have to warn you, I told myself when I got my Viper that I will be keeping it stock cause it is fast enough. Then boom! Next thing I know it has a S/C all kinda stuff and soon it will be going in for new heads and cam.

Dam...just a thought. So where you live, you are able to buy a house, a viper and all kinds of goodies on a 40k salary? Man I need to move there, then I might be able to buy me a few more Vipers...lol

But, like above, if you think you can swing it, buy it.

Re: Salary Poll

Best advice I can give you is don't look to others for validation!

I bought mine in my 20s but I was in a different situation than you it sounds like - but that shouldn't stop you.

Whatever you do, just be smart about it. Don't get upside down on any loans, make sure you've got some money in savings, etc. etc. Vipers run like a clock - just oil and gas and its as reliable as a civic IMO.

A used Viper these days isn't too big a deal cost wise, so follow your dreams, just be smart about it.

Re: Salary Poll

40K a year just isnt that much money. Honestly, I couldnt fathom living on that kind of money. With only about $2K a month after taxes, why the hell would you want to spend all your money on a car note? Top it off, youre going to have to find a car with an extended warranty..and drive this thing in all types of weather. I wouldnt do it. Most guys here (not all) use their vipers as a second "fun" car.

Re: Salary Poll

It's good that you already have a house...good job. Here is how I would go about buying a viper....with cash. Save your money untill you can afford to buy it this way. This will help you out in many ways.

1.) NO CAR PAYMENT!

2.) The car will be cheaper when you can afford one.

3.) You will have more pride in the car knowing you it's paid for.

4.) You will save a 10K in interest depending on the loan....thus being able to put on a roe supercharger system. /images/graemlins/toothy

That is how I bought my 01 ACR. Look arould you'll find a good deal. I picked up an 01 ACR for 53k...it HAD 6500mi on it. Take your time when looking for one. Will my ACR be stock for some time to come....yep. I want to finnish paying off my house and buy the wifey a new SLK350....So it'll take a little time to mod but when I do...I will not have a payment to worry about.

Re: Salary Poll

If you are making $40K/year, you would be foolish to lock yourself into a car note equaling your entire year's salary. If you do, the car will quickly become a source of stress, not fun. Take the money you would have made on the payment, save it, and invest it. In a few years, take that money and buy a used Viper. You will be much happier.

BTW, don't listen to Dr. Roof--he's a gazillionaire.

Re: Salary Poll

Lol you all have good points, two things snake bitten, in regard to my handle I use it on the audi forum and the lexus boards, someone gave me the nick name because I love chrome and usually use it on my car's "shoe's" ... so no drugs for me. Also i'm about to upgrade to a larger house and in one year have made 50k in appreciation my neighbor just sold a few weeks back same house and all for 157k so I know the 50k appreciation is exactly what i'm going to get. So i have lots of options
