Currently it is difficult to regain your rating after a troll or another member has degraded your rating. Currently the rating is done by average. A single 1 vote can be detrimental to your rating and my be difficult to recover. There is a proposal to recover ratings (sunglasses) by posting. Each post will yield points towards the recovery of maximum ratings. Should this be done?

I dont know if "each post" would be a good idea; but maybe every 50 posts gives you a point or something. But this poll seems just about the idea of it - not the specifics.

Ok hows this? 2 points for one sunglass back. 50 posts for a point. I think it would be ridiculous to start a poll on the rules for this. I think a discussion here will work....at least I hope it will work /images/graemlins/smile.gif

It sounds to me that what you are really want to do is to find the 90'th percentile so that a weighted average will be your "score". Thus if someone gives you a 1 and you already had three 5's, you'd still keep a five and not a 4.

If you cut away the extremes and find a nice boundary (i like the 90th percentile, but you can use something like two standard deviations), you will get the score of the "typical" member and it won't be unfairly weighted because of one really bad score dragging down the whole average.

Or if you really want to make it easy, just go and use a mean instead of an average. A mean score will also get rid of a troll putting one or a few "1's" in an otherwise typical "3" or so.

I agree with par. I am also concerned with post whoring on our site...and this policy would generate further incentive for certain posters.

All this wasted energy, Smoke. Come on....calmly and seriously....get rid of the glasses and post counts. All you are worrying about now is APPEARANCE. Sit back for a moment and think about what it would be like without the little glasss and no post counters. How would it be any different than now? The only BIG difference I see is that you (and others) would not be worring about how many sunglasses you have and how to get them back once they are lost! Level the playing field...NOBODY has glasses or post count. You and I already know you are cool...and Craig, PJ...et al. Sorry for the rant....just an honest 2 cents thrown in to try to dissuade you from all this seemingly childish behavior. NO, I did not just call you childish....just this thing worrying about the sunglasses. NO flame intended...you guys can do SO MUCH better than getting hooked on appearances (unless you're off to the bar!!). /images/graemlins/smile.gif I voted no for the reasons stated above. I honestly don'rt care how many sunglasses I have, or you have, or PJ...."not my bag, baby". /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I also voted no. The desire to have many (or few) sunglasses has nothing to do with the way i see or judge anyone who posts here. I've found red5's "I'll steal a pair of glasses from ya" threats funny, but they don't change in any way who i am or what people think of me.

Change the math, keep 'em as they are or remove them. Making the amount of sunglasses you have a function of how many posts you make seems a bit silly.

my honest opinion.

Well, its a double edged sword. Granted post count is not the "end all" in saying what kind of contributor someone is for the board. But it is a good indicator. Someone with 50 posts in one year is not a real significant contributor, but someone with 2000 in one year is more LIKELY to be one. Granted, those posts may have contain post whoring, but weve ran polls on all these subjects already. The fact of the matter is, that the members want post counts, and moderators can lock post whoring threads when they are out of hand. So since these things all do exist, and have been voted on, lets table those issues and try to improve upon or remove the flaws on a platform that the users like and have voted to keep.

It seems that supreme viper's gripe is with post counts and user ratings. However weve had polls on these subjects already. They are there. So voting no, doesnt change this, the question is not whether or not you want to be able to recover ratings through contributing to the board, knowing that the moderators CAN stop post whoring if it gets out of hand.

I have no gripe Smoke...I get a kick out of it all! So much energy...to what end? Oh...my entertainment! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

More of the "Who's dick is bigger" stuff. I'll always have the same opinion...sorry you have a problem with that. /images/graemlins/frown.gif

Supreme, I have no problem with it. But as you have noticed the characters on this board are competitive over everything. Everyone is trying to outdo the next person on every facet of every little thing. I think it adds to the fun. But it might be part of the makeup of people who strive to be the best they can be at everything. The mere fact that they buy the Viper, an inpractical toy to everyone else, but these guys must have the fastest, best, most monstrous beast this side of $1/4 million.

Smokin,

If you tell me that someone is making fun of the fact that you only have four pair left. They will be at your level as soon as I log on.

Unfortunatly, because I feel a little on the touchy side over this issue. I have decided to dock anyone who votes yes on this issue opne pair of sunglasses. I will begin at 3:00 Eastern time. Unless you can convince me other wise.

I am sorry that things have to go this way for many of you. But it is like beating a dead horse to me. Mention anything sunglasses related and you will have to tell me why i shouldn't take a pair from you.

I take that back, vote as you may. But all of you will lose a pair at 3:00 Eastern Standard time unless you can convinve me why I shouldn't.

Actually it isnt a tie anymore wiht "yes" outnumbering no with 2 votes. This poll has run its course. The members have voted to have a point system put in place to recover sunglasses.
