On this board all policy making decisions are done with the consent of the members. A recent issue is post whoring, where nothing is done other than to add to post count. Some have complained that its out of hand and we should do something about it. We did lock two threads that added no value. However instead of continuing to do this. We wanted to make sure that the membership is ok with this policy. When it becomes obvious that the thread has become nothing than an opportunity to add post count and the posts are about nothing, then the thread will be locked. Threads with only a couple of questionable replies will be left alone. However the ones that go on for pages should be locked.

I disagree with that. Although all here have the common tie of the viper, many frequent Anything goes more than any other area. I dont see anything wrong with that. But vote as you please.

I voted no. I think that it will be very hard to determine when a thread is PW or not. Big picture, if that's what the members want to do why shouldn't they? The count doesn't matter at all to me, and i am sure the PW will go away. Moderation is done best in moderation /images/graemlins/smile.gif

this is all about having fun and it seems like that these "Post whore" threds are just a bunch of people that are having fun. There entertaing to read. The main people who do these post whoring threds are not even on the top ten yet. And I secound what on par says.
I can see where everyone is coming from.

If a particular thread is being used for post whoring, then I think it may actually be a good thing. What I mean is that if we are fed say one thread a week to post whore on and get all of our craziness out, then the other threads will not suffer with someone who wants to talk a lot about nothing, or raise their post count. I agree with the above, some of those threads where post whoring was taking place was all in fun. I would rather have one 10 page thread about nothing a week than all threads having no value or go so far off the topic of the threadm that one loses interest.

Although the poll shows that moderators can lock threads by a slight margin. The poll is too close to call. 11 votes to 10. Therefore the policy will remain unchanged and posts will be left alone.

Ok I have been contacted that it was unfair to lock this poll and not implement the decision even though it was a very close call. Personally I think its still too close to call. I'll leave it open until noonish tomorrow (PST) at which point I will close it down and we will implement the decision no matter how close the outcome. Does this sound good? Do we need a poll on close call decisions?

Even IF it turns out that a slight majority wants obvious PW threads closed, this poll effectively gives the mods the right to determine and close a thread. A close vote would, IMHO, suggest that the mods be lienient in their (our) determination of when "it becomes obvious that the thread has become nothing than an opportunity to add post count and the posts are about nothing". Some "lieniency" might allow those that enjoy these threads to play with the understanding that the mods are charged with closing it down before "too" long.

Smoke,

i think your first conclusion was dead on. Too close to call. It's not a clear majority either way, and while citysnake offers a good compromise it really wasn't what the members voted on. Either declare it too close to call or declare a winner.

Im going to lock this thread now. The result still gives the moderators the ability topull posts by a VERY narrow margin. However due to the nature of the results (very very close (2% margin). I am going to say that moderators must be VERY careful in locking this thread and use as much leniency as possibe. Only clear extensive violations shuold be locked.
