My retirement gift in 04 after 22 in the Air Force was going to be a Viper, a big impractical waste of money, Yes! Things didn't work out. A few years ago, I saw an internet CarFax Ad with a nice 03 Viper, good numbers in Greensboro, N.C. I called them and picked it up the next day. Little problems and fixes here and there but no big issues. Vipers are over engineered in most aspects and are brutal durable, it's my daily. Gen 3 v 4; a 4 is better and more sophisticated, but I like convertibles and all the rudimentary dials and shit in the Gen 3; (A-10 driver in previous life). It's all good.

03s had oil pickup problems on the track that were corrected on 04+. 04s have longer, smaller diameter crank damper bolts that are known to stretch and lose tension. This leads to ruined crank snouts, or worse.

Wasn’t the oil pick up problem in all Gen 3’s? Which is why everyone does the swinging oil pickup/Gen 4 upgrade? I also have heard of the crank damper bolts backing out on all year Gen 3’s but some were boosted so I’m not sure if that makes a difference.

I am by no means an expert on G3-5 platforms. However, I've owned Vipers for coming up on 30 continuous years. I have been active on all the Forums since around '96 and I've picked up a few things along the way. (I owned an '03 for 2 weeks and sold it) Take my comments with a grain of salt and maybe let them steer you to a more definitive source. Since my GTS went out of extended warranty, I've personally wrenched on 70% of my car issues and am pretty knowledgeable about the Gen 2 in particular.

Why do you prefer driving the 2005? Also, where did you get that front bumper for the 08? I much prefer that bumper over the stock one.
The 05 is just easyer and tamer. Throttle responce is much better and with the top down I can see out much better. The 08 with a touch of the gas to spin the rears is a bit scary on the tight roads I drive the most, but
Damn it look cool! The front end was put on back in 09 and is no longer avaliable. I had to make a aluminum skid plate for it to keep from draging it on some dips in the road, 900.00 bucks for the plate.

Good to know. Both look great and I do think that bumper you have on the 2008 is a big improvement looks wise

03-06 use the same pickup, it changed in 08 to the swinging pickup.

I sell the Gen 3 swing arm mods. Message me if you want one.

Quite a few Military dudes in this thread. A-10 was always a dream of mine to fly, but all the hoping in the world didn't get them into the Army's hands. So I got stuck being a Hawk driver for 20 years................ :D
