First off, this will require that you remove your radio faceplate trim piece...I need someone to take pics of something for me (the way it came from the factory).

I'm in a bit of a spot and could really use the help - PM me if you have a moment and don't mind popping the faceplate off your dash to do some sleuthing for me.

Ever had the cigarette lighter assembly apart?

I'm talking about the actual hull that the lighter plugs into...it comes apart and as it turns out, it comes apart in several pieces...

Yeah, I think I have, cause IIRC the power line plugs into the back of it. Anyway, you just want a pic of the empty adapter with the face plate off?

There's a little nut inside the back of the lighter "hull" that when pulled allows the assembly to be removed from the bezel panel itself.

When I loosend mine, I didn't have my thumb inside of the lighter so everything kind of fell apart...after inspection I put it together and it's now shorting out and blowing the fuse each and every time I reconnect power (tried twice so I evidently have something bassackwards in the reassembly process).

I'll take a quick pic of the bits all apart...what I need is a pic of inside of the "hull" as it rests in the bezel, a pic of the backside and if you can't see the little white insulator ring, I need a pic of where that goes...which may require that you loosen that nut and start poking around.

(I'll buy you a case of your favorite beer or wine!)

Here's a pic of the damned thing...if I'd only known it was comprised of so many bits I would have taken before and after pics! issed:

As it was, as soon as that nut came loose it all just fell out (uhhhhhhhhhh)

The insulator (white ring with a ? next to it) is the key to it not blowing sparks I'm sure. I've tried 3 or 4 different positions and fried a fuse each time.

Easiest things always turn out this way...gotta love it. heh

Here ya go, I think this shows what you need. I checked the shop manual too but it doesn't show the break-apart diagram of the lighter.

And yup - I checked the service manual too and all I got was the paragraph on how to pop it in and out (groovy).

The little metal posts (the horned bit inside) - do either of the posts make contact with the insides of the copper hull on yours?

Oh, and for those of you keeping score at home...I posted this same request on the morgue about 30 minutes before I did here. Out of habit really.

It occurred to me that I should probably post here on the alley too. Just to cover all the bases.

As of right now, there are 36 views over there and not a single reply or PM.

Within 10 minutes (10!!) of posting here, not only did I have a reply but an offer to help a fellow Viper brother out. Within 20 I had another offer to help from someone else entirely.

With 30 minutes less time here in the alley, the problem was articulated, identified and the solution provided...all before a single "maybe I can help" was even offered "back home".

If that's not proof enough that the alley is the place to hang, bullshit AND talk tech then I don't know what is.

Nexus, that's awesome.. .Org has been REALLY SLOW lately - almost NO new posts in days. Glad to see that the tech has started to pick up here. I agree we have a lot of Viper knowledge at the Alley!
