NA Motor?

1778 Views 21 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  John Hennessey
OK, so has my time gets slightly closer (fingers still crossed) to getting my viper, I have yet another question. How much power can be gotten out of a stock viper motor?( I know I am stirring the pot ) No No2, No Blower, No Turbo. Also what is a ball park range has to price? I am debating on the All Motor or Blown Snake. I plan on tracking the car ALOT and from the info that I have gotten; an all-motor car is best. I plan on street/strip also but very few times. Am I wrong about the all-motor?
Thanks For The Help In Advance

you want to go faster at the track upgrade the brakes, suspension and colling/oil systems first. No point in having all that speed on the straights if you can't slow down or last the whole day. For track use I probably wouldn't want more than 550 RWHP to keep it bulletproof reliable.
Thanks for the advice Craig. I am such a novice going into this, and I want to do it right. I would think that more HP would help if it was done right. Brakes, suspension and cooling are deff on my list to do first. Depending on what happens next week business wise, it looks like I will be looking for my snake has an x-mass present to my self (50/50 chance)
Also thanks to everyone for dealing with the pre-school questions.
Craig's right. For track "A LOT", don't put your first mod $ into HP. The yield on a track will be minimal. Stay N/A and, eventually, do a complete balanced rebuild with upgrades. You'll get all the HP you need and have a solid motor. Brakes and handling will be less expensive and give you a MUCH more noticeable gain on the track.

Send a PM to Chuck 98 RT10. He tracks weekly and knows his stuff! I'm sure you'll get yjr right answers.
Depends..Lingenfelter was running 11 flat on motor, on street tires(?)
A guy in Sweden (Venomousracing.com) runs high 10s.
A couple of tuners were cutting open the intake to port it, and welding it back together (Lingenfelter and Don Nase) among other things to get max HP.

Headwork and a cam are a must for those numbers on motor only it would seem.
its all a matter of preference with regard to performance upgrades. i do agree with the braking and handling upgrades being first, thats the route i went. i myself am probably going all motor, heres what i have planned;

car currently has tubes, filters, and exhaust mods; Im dynoed at 440.8 RWHP and 487.3 TQ so im doing good so far; my upgrades are gonna be;

stage III heads (westcoast viper)
T&D roller rockers
VEC2
Intake manifold upgrade (west coast vipers)

with the above I can expect about 625-650RWHP with an insane amount of torque, and no problem with maintaining my daily driver weekend racer capabilities. since my bucket is a 99 viper, im gonna keep my stock (708) cam as its ideal for what i want.

Do you really think you will get 625-650 RWHP from those mods and a stock cam??

My guess would be 525 RWHP. Most heads with agressive cams only see 550-560 to the tires. Good luck and I hope you prove me wrong! :thumb:
Worry about track stuff first:

I...

- upgraded the PS cooler (a must)
- upgraded the oil pan
- later model "deep" oil pan
- custom baffles
- windage tray
- added a 2qt AccuSump, with dash-mounted switch
- added ss brake lines
- added air deflectors
(i'm about to go to full ducting)
- rerouted PCV breather lines thru catch can
- B&M ripper shifter w/ MGW knob
- Sparco Pro 2K race seat
- TeamTech 5pt restraints
- Roe cooling fan trigger, with dash-mounted switch
- SmartTire pressure sensor system

..and my wishlist still has:
- StopTech 4 wheel bb upgrade
- rollbar
- Purner CCW wheels w/Hoosiers
- fire suppression
- half-shaft upgrade

The *only* power change I've made so far was to put on a Corsa 3" exhaust with hi-flow cats - and that was for the sound, not the power. I still even have the stock headers.

You don't want to get out onto the track with 600HP and have a spec miata lay the wood to you or have your motor grenade due to oil starvation.

I need to print this stuff out. Keeping tabs on the upgrades for the future. At this point i am going for all motor. the blower is nice, but that might be something for way later on. How intrusive are the roll bars ? The car is also going to be most likely a daily driver, would the roll bar make getting into the car a pain in the ass?
Thanks again, soaking up all the info
If you are interested in an all motor car, you might want to give RSI ( Racing Solutions ) a call. The did SW's car and it made almost 700 RWHP, and ran a 10.08. Rohn K's car ran a 10.66 on motor with his car set up for nitrous ( cold plugs & race gas ) and a 3.07 gear. They build some bad ass motors. Albert Chlouber even has his car there now doing a stroker motor.

Exactly who builds those engines? Does RSI send them out to be built like I heard?

Other than Jerome's post fanning the flames of a new thread, This is probably the most important thread that I'm EVER going to read! My entire purpose for buying a Viper will be for Track Application. Unlike my other brutha's here who are quarter mile Speed Demons like Scotty TOOOFST, Rich, Gerald's Mouth(SnakeBitten), etc.. Thanks for starting this thread!

Ya HEAR ME!?

Jay K.

PS. Gerald Your STILL THE KING OF SMACK Bar NONE!!!
Fanning flames? I just asked a simple question that's all.

Just wanted to know if this is a rumor or if it is true. What's the big secret.

I will leave this thread alone so you can get your "answers" /images/graemlins/wave.gif

Jerome on a RFI, I apologize. I put my foot in my mouth thinking that this was a Tuner Bash rather that a Request For Info(RFI).

Jay no need to apologize.

I am just gathering info for my "journal". I keep notes on who's who and who is doing what. When my snake is in my garage I will have a large book of info on where to get what and who does what well.

I try to never bash any tuner, we all can learn from every one of them.

SW used to track a very fast modded N/A viper. Not sure how much HP he was really making but I think it might've been in the 650 HP range. He eventually sold it and got another Viper whose engine he left pretty much stock. He told me he thought he got around the track faster on the one with the stock motor. The power of that modded car was too much of a handful to be useful on the road course ... and that's coming from a really good driver too.

So if what you honestly want to do is be fast on the track then don't even bother with the motor. First learn to drive the car stock. Then spend your first bucks on track tires and brake pads. Then maybe look at suspension tuning, but don't even think about power mods making you any quicker. It's got plenty right out of the box. Probably enough that it will be a liability for you while you're learning.

The only thing those highly modded cars are good for is posing, dyno-queening and maybe drag racing (if their owners actually did any racing) /images/graemlins/supergrin.gif

FYI every tuner around sends their engines out for machine work etc... It is no big secret. It's all about who they send it to. So far it would seem that they have the fastest cars around. Do you disagree?

Not sure if I agree or disagree. Fastest implies speed. What is there top speed in the 1/4 mile again? I am not up on who has what record. That was not my question here.

And yes it is true that most tuners farm out the machine work, but I wanted to know who assembles the engines? Does RSI build them or just drop them in after someone else builds them?

Not starting shit here, just asking questions is all.

Research my good man.......research.

I would assume they do both, they have several motors there on engine stands now. Went by there today with Albert to check on his car, they have a twin turbo project on the way also. Will keep you guys updated.
Thank you for the answer.

If they do install engines farmed out, there is no shame in what they do. I just like to know if I was to say have them "build" my enigine who exactly did the actual assembly.

I once in a while do some engines for a few local street stock guys. My buddy that owns the engine shop I build them in uses his name on the car as engine supplier. Even though he has nothing to do with the engines beside the use of his clean room and cell.

My name is not found on the car, but I do the work. His shop gets the credit.......
