OK, so I finally get to ride in a Twin Turbo Viper -- Yellow Fever's car to be exact. He comes into my community and I hear the whoosh of his turbo as he hits 50 mph in what seemed like 2 seconds and then brakes for my driveway, pulls in and we start talking. After some time we decide to take his car to lunch.
Now all I have been hearing on these forums from current and ex super charger guys is how when they go for a ride in a turbo car, they are blown away by how it feels. I gotta call bullshit on this. If there's a difference between Yellow Fever's car and mine in terms of INSTANT torque or 'throwing you back in your seat' feeling, it is negligible -- I didn't feel it. His car hits HARD! But so does mine. In fact, I thought that my car from a 3K punch hit harder than Jeff's, but Jeff felt his hit harder. Under 3K I would bet that Jeff's car would feel harder, but we didn't test that range. What we should have done is threw my G-tech into each car and measured the lateral G-force, but I just thought of that -- Ha. If we were to have run today, we both would have been running 93 octane instead of crappy 91, and I would have clicked my 'power knob' over into race mode. What Jeff felt was the daily driver mode of my car.
My car produces more HP than Jeff's, but his produces my max Torque number way down low in the RPM range. I would have expected Jeff's car to blow his fawking wheels off the road, but I was amazed that 19 inch pilots hooked in 2nd gear from a 3K pedal mash -- He must put super glue on those things -- boggles my mind. Makes me reconsider some 19 inch BLINGERS for my car.
What I really liked about Jeff's car is the drivability of it. The car was quiet -- like REALLY quiet. We had the radio going, top off and were holding a conversation. Under wide open throttle, it was probably as quiet as my car is 3K rpm- LOL! My car sounded really good when I finally had all my exhaust on, prior to one of my mufflers falling apart. Nowhere near as quiet as his, but tough sounding and not obnoxious like it is right now. My car when exceeding certain RPM's starts blowing off the excess air, and that sounds cool to me -- constant WHOOOOOOOOOSH! But it certainly is loud, but I wouldn't change that about my car.
His car was smooth... mine has some lope to it -- some people prefer a louder more tough sound from their viper, and a little cam lope is desired by many. But this really has to do with the cam in my car and not the supercharger. To be honest, Jeff's car would be too quiet for me on my GTS -- sounds too docile -- a sleeper for sure. On the SRT-10 that I plan on getting, the sound of Jeff's car would be perfect -- a sleeper is what I would want in that car! Jeff has the ultimate sleeper that will rape practically everything on the road without them knowing they are about to be raped.
Jeff's car ran cool from everything I saw. It looks better in person than in the photos, especially his wheels. Jeff's a good driver too.
So what's the verdict? Bottom line is I feel that my car felt and pulled harder. Jeff can agree to disagree with me on this one and we won't know until we actually race each other, but I would be willing to lay some good coin down on myself from a 2nd or 3rd gear roll on.
And those of you who have superchargers and say that the turbos feel like night and day on throwing you back in your seat, you need to upgrade your super charger set up and get you some more torque. Maybe I was expecting this night and day difference, and expected too much?
What would I get on my SRT-10? To be honest, I would probably go with a Turbo. Not because it felt stronger or any of those reasons. I would go with the turbo because it would allow me to have a QUIET car that sounds and runs stock -- something where I can turn boost down to almost nothing and let my gal run around town in it, and then crank it up when I wanna go out with the boys. That makes it worth it. HOWEVER, I would want a turbo system that makes my supercharger setup feel slow -- and to do that would probably require substantial upgrades to other non-engine parts.
Just thought I would give you guys my opinion of both vehicles -- this from somebody who has a supercharger, but who will most likely get a turbo on the Gen 3 if drivetrain issues are worked out for the power I would like.
