A Silver Arrow hits the Streets

+ Pure race-bred engineering
+ 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, top speed 320 km/h
+ Limited series of 5 handcrafted cars for the Roadster
+ Limited series of 25 handcrafted cars for the Coupe

In November 1998, the first two road-going CLK-GTR Coupes were handed over to customers; cars whose racing derivative has caused a tremendous stir through its exceptional success in two consecutive FIA GT Championships. In all, 25 of these supercars are to be built, matching remarkable performance with a rare degree of exclusivity.

Following the success of the awesome CLK GTR Coupe, AMG has set aside just 5 chassis to fashion into the even more exclusive CLK GTR Roadster. Based entirely on the Coupe, the open-top Roadster offers pure wind-in-the hair motoring at its absolute pinnacle. Classic Car Collection is honoured to have the exclusive sale rights to cars number 1 and 5 - cars 2, 3 and 4 being reserved for previous customers of the Coupe. We have recently sold car number 5 and therefore car number 1 is the last remaining Roadster available in the World, exclusive to the Classic Car Collection. (We are the exclusive HWA-AMG factory authorized export partner).

The race-bred pedigree of the CLK-GTR is obvious at a glance. Every inch worthy of its racing counterpart, the road car crouches low on the asphalt. Its pulse-racing silhouette which would grace any GT grid covers 4855 mm from nose to tail, measures 1950 mm across and boasts a highest point just 1164 mm off the road surface. A streamlined front end incorporates a typical Mercedes-style radiator and the sporty twin-headlamp look of the CLK. Deliciously curved wings wrap themselves lovingly around the big wheels, while a generously dimensioned spoiler rounds off the tail in dynamic style above tail lights that underline the car's Mercedes heritage.

128 days to forge a Silver Arrow

That proud heritage is further reflected in a typical commitment to quality and to upholding the standards set by the legendary Silver Arrows. Perhaps the one feature of the CLK-GTR that brings out this close relationship most clearly is the way the doors open upwards, for ail the world like the gullwing doors on the legendary 300 SL - an immortal trademark of those giants of the Fifties. In 1997, 128 days was all it took for the race-hardened professionals at AMG to get the initial road-going version of the CLK GTR from drawing board to roll-out. It was built to comply with the homologation requirements of the FIA GT series, and laid the foundations for the race cars that have since notched up so many convincing victories in the championship.

Race engineering pushes back the bounds of feasibility

The performance data alone are enough to put the close relationship between the roadgoing CLK-GTR and its racing counterpart beyond doubt. The CLK-GTR accelerates from 0-200 km/h in 9.9 seconds - a value normally considered on the dynamic side for the 0-100 km/h sprint. The CLK-GTR driver can watch the needle go through the 100 km/h mark in just 3.8 seconds - a figure more readily associated with the likes of Formula 1 - before pouring on the power to take the car surging to its top speed of 320 km/h.

To ally such performance data with safe motoring, the experts at AMG have been pushing back the bounds of what is technically feasible. They have built a race-proven, highly torsion resistant monocoque for the CLK-GTR in a carbon fibre composite material - and used the same exotic material for the bodywork. The driver and passenger are surrounded by an integrated steel roll cage with crash boxes at the front and sides. The 90-litre fuel tank is located centrally, well protected by the monocoque.

A V 12 power plant generating 450 kW/612 bhp

From the amidships location selected for it by AMG's racing car designers, the Mercedes V 12 engine exudes lashings of raw power. The specialists at AMG have increased the basic swept volume of this high-tech power plant with its 4-valve technology from 6 to 6.9 litres. Other key features that have been modified include a new air intake system developed by AMG, as well as a specially designed high-performance header, leading into a twin exhaust that includes a complex exhaust treatment system with no less than four catalytic converters. On top of which, AMG's engineers have added a Bosch HMS6 engine management unit for each cylinder bank, with software specially adapted for the GT car.

The fruits of their dedicated efforts are reflected in an output of 450 kW/612 bhp at 6800 rpm and an impressive 775 Nm of torque at 5250 rpm, making for breathtaking acceleration and giving the supercar with the three-pointed star a power-to-weight ratio of just 3.2 kg/kW.

Gearshift and suspension derived from racing version

CLK-GTR drivers shift up and down via a six-speed sequential gearbox, activated by means of rocker switches on the steering wheel. And to make quite sure that the immense amount of torque available is exploited to best effect, AMG has fitted a threeplate clutch.

In addition to delivering an astonishing amount of power, the engine joins the transaxle unit and a subframe in performing a load-bearing function for the rear suspension. To equip it for this dual role, AMG's designers have bolted the engine to the rear of the monocoque.

Racing-style suspension makes for active safety of the very highest order. The independent front and rear suspension features double wishbones all round, providing precision wheel location. Pull-rod operated coil springs and gas filled shock absorbers keep those wide tires firmly in contact with the asphalt. On top of which, manually adjustable stabilisers permit the character of the suspension to be adapted to the driver's personal preferences. Responsive rack-and-pinion power steering allows the driver to put the car exactly where he or she wants it.

High-performance brakes

When it comes to stopping the Mercedes CLK-GTR in its tracks, AMG's approach is typically uncompromising. Six-piston aluminium calipers at the front and four-piston aluminium calipers at the rear grip ventilated grey cast-iron discs with generous diameters of 355 and 330 millimetres at the front and rear respectively. Needless to say, ABS is part of the package. There is plenty of space for the brake discs in the CLK-GTRs 18-inch alloy wheels - 10.5 and 12.5 inches wide at the front and rear respectively and equiped with 295/35 ZR 18 tyres at the front and 345/35 ZR 18 tyres at the rear.

High levels of safety and equipment

For all the technical evidence of the CLK-GTR's close relationship with its racing counterpart, a rapport so clearly reflected in its handling, the effort and expense that AMG's design engineers invested in adapting the car for its road-going role were truly substantial. European registration regulations and safety requirements both had to be met. Apart from which, this supercar also had to match up to the rigorous safety criteria that apply to every Mercedes-Benz. Accordingly, the CLK-GTR was put through crash tests and equipped with driver and passenger airbags and 4-point safety harnesses.

But in terms of both comfort and equipment levels, the CLK-GTR has far more to offer than a car designed as an out-and-out racer. By way of example, AMG supplies the road-going version with a leather steering wheel, air conditioning, audio system, leather trim, Parktronic parking aid, electrically adjustable door mirrors and an adjustable ASR acceleration skid control system. And they've even allowed for some luggage: the side pods on the left and right offer 160 litres of storage space.

Handcrafted with painstaking care

The 25-unit limited edition is currently being built in the Ossweil district of Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart. The task is entrusted to a team of specialists who have not only amassed a wealth of experience in motor sport but also demonstrate remarkable flexibility and set about their task with great commitment and painstaking care and attention. In fact there are three teams, each comprising a team leader and three mechanics, working in parallel on the coveted Silver Arrows. Because at AMG, building special purpose vehicles is always a team job; a job for that rare breed of individualist who can also find his slot in a team. Engineering support is provided by the production engineering, pre-assembly, production, logistics, engine and electronics sec'tors. The result is a matrix structure much like the ones used in motor sport. This guarantees that the teams maintain direct links to design/development and to quality management in particular throughout the entire production process, leading to a product that can justifiably claim to represent the state of the engineering art.

Vehicle jacking system

All vehicles are equipped with a special, electro-hydraulic three-pillar vehicle jacking system, which enables the driver to raise and lower the vehicle automatically by simply using a switch which is hidden away in the service flap.

Tyrefit

Since the CLK-GTR is as close to a pure racing car as possible, there is no spare wheel. Instead a tirefit is used. This liquid is stored in a can in the luggage compartment. In case of damage to a tyre the car is to be raised with the vehicle jacking system and the tirefit is then easily squeezed into the tyre by applying a filler hose between the can and the tyre valve. The sealant is spread within the tyre. The luggage compartment also holds a electric pump which can be plugged into the battery charger socket to restore the tyre pressure. Within a few minutes you will be able to resume your journey!

Way better looking than the Mclaren.
Whaaaaaaat? I think both of those CLK cars look almost cartoonish. I don't like the was they tried to graft in the production style MB grille in the front and the rear, with those tail lights, is very unattractive. It's a cool car from an overall perspective and performance standpoint. But not nearly the highest in my book for styling.
