I just picked up the March issue of Sport Compact Car. It has the results of the Ultimate Street Car Challenge. Paolo has several great shots in the mag. Has anyone else seen it yet?

ofcourse rice will win.. it IS a rice mag.
Actually, that's not necessarily the case with this contest.

Last year, the late great Paul Mumford won it and I believe a mostly stock Ferrari 360 Modena won the year before. I wouldn't call them rice! :thumb:

I didn't want to be the one to tell everyone the sad news. A ricer beat Paolo's viper for the top honors. But as everyone knows, it is a ricer magazine. They couldn't let a Viper win two years in a row!

Here are the results. Paolo, could you comment on some of the tests, like WTF is the Grandma test? And why did the Gross Display of HP only yield a top score of 23 instead of 110?

Wjhat happened to the 0-60 and 1/4 times for the Viper? Was there a restriction. Cause I know Paolo cars is much faster than that. How the hell does a 350z, Ultima, and Supra out do a Viper in a car show category? My bro. has a black 350z and my friend has a Ultima...and there is no way they can beat a Viper in a car show! Maybe there is more to the categories than their names suggest.

Paolo put together extensive write-ups of the entire process over on the VCA site I believe, including explaining the tests and what happened.

That is some of the most HEAVILY JADED BS tests I've ever SEEN!!

Testing Structure:

GROSS DISPLAY OF HP AND PWR (1 Point Scale)
Gross Display of Subjective RICE (100,000,000 Point Scale)
Realizing that the Viper has the Torque of a FreightTrain and all the other competitor cars are girly (PRICELESS!)

What is the link? I went over to the VCA but got sick of wading through the two vipair threads and countless "is the viper super cool or what?" threads. I just can't subject myself to any more windbreakerage.

149 ft. 60-0!! /images/graemlins/shocked WTF?
Rollmodel, I locked 'em up on the dusty, sandy surface. I did not practice the 60-zero stops on the dust before the contest. I think all of the other cars had ABS. I did not and bit the big one on this portion of the test!

Jay, the thing that killed me was the magazine changing the Ultima base price from 91k to 30K on the second day right before the end of the contest. They make it look like that was the base price structure from the get-go, but the fact of the matter is that at the beginning of the second day, I was in 3rd place, not 5th and the skyline was only 83 points ahead of me by that point. After it blew up I think they scrambled to make sure an import car would win it this time. The Ultima never made a clean full lap around the course without spinning out yet they gave him a 1 minute 17.5 second lap time which was right in there with the professional drivers.

The driveability score of 33 out of 100 was B.S. in my opinion because the guy was driving my car at 4500+ rpm cruising down the street and I noticed the temperature going up, by the time he listened to me the car was heat soaked going 30-40 MPH. I told him this car does not rev to 7-8000 RPM like the other cars and that he should keep it at 3000 RPM for cruising at slow speeds in 95+degree temperatures.

I think the Guru panel was biased as both eclipses beat my car in this category.

They called my car a 'Visa' car which means I went out and bought a bunch of shit with my credit card and threw it on.==> Yeah, that's right, a totally rebuilt motor with billet main caps and ceramic coatings on the exhaust ports and combustion chambers, valves and pistons, a custom fabricated supercharger kit with fuel system(the fuel pump is nowhere close to being a "fraction of an inch " from the driveshaft) and scatter shield, drive shaft and 1/2 shaft loops, diff and trans coolers and a special oil cooler with its own fan, custom full roll cage, shcoks, springs/etc.......==> the guru panel measures how much you have modified the car from stock and how cleanly it was all done and how functional it is........ Do you really think those eclipses had near the shit done on them as my car? No F'ing way! Do you think you could buy any and probably all the aftermarket shit on their cars off of 100's of websites with your Visa card? Getting fucked in this category by SCC, PRICELESS! They even say they gave the black eclipse extra points because he DID NOT modify certain things. I try not to bitch but I really did not think that remark had any place being attached to my car. I have to go now and will post later on tonight.

I fail to understand why the hell the 0-60 times and 1/4 mile were so bad?? I expected MUCH better coming from Paolo's car. Also what happened with the lap times?

how did the 350z get more points in fuel economy..when the viper got more miles?

Repete, the 350Z got 10 extra points for running 91 octane. I did not feel like filling up my car with that shit only to have to grandma the car around town all night to get rid of the 91 to run the gas the car is tuned for for all the performance tests. I drove up that mountain in 5th gear in 10 inches of vacuum most of the time and completely shut off the car for 20 some miles down the mountain. The steering and braking are a bitch without power. People were breaking my balls the whole way down at certain points because I was not coasting all that fast: Did I care? NO! I went there to kick ass and 28.8 MPG was the 3rd best in the test. Believe me, nobody was more surprised than me because I was used to getting 80 or less miles TO THE TANK because I could not keep my foot out of it. It was nice to know what the car can do when I have to be good/frugal with the gas consumption.
