Lubing door hinges

I think my door hinges are in need of some lubing, what should I use? Something other than WD-40 necessary / recommended? Do I need to be extra careful not to get it on the paint, e.g., like brake fluid?

I use "Motul" MC chain lube and it works well and stays. It's sticker than white grease and beats the hell out of PJ1 MC chain lube.
