I know I have asked this before, but I'm asking again to make sure. I took the cats off the car about 2 months ago, I LOVE the sound, don't mind the smell, but I don't like smelling like exhaust fumes when I'm crusing around town or going to the clubs, doesn't really turn the girls on. Is there a high-flow cat that makes a big sound difference than stock and sound close to having no cats without the stinky smell? I don't want to pay 400 or 500 dollars and still smell, but dont mind paying if it doesnt stink and sounds good!!

Thankssss!!!!

I think you will hear about the Random Tech Metal Substrate cats. I can't say what they will do to the sound of your Viper but the one I have on my VR4 makes it sound deeper than none at all. And it does not smell either.

Some of the guys here have these and should be able to help you out more.

you will not find the sound you are looking for from any high flo cat. It is inherent for them to kill the sound as the filter the gases. Most hi flo cats will deepen the sound, but no where near the sound from running no cats.

I have the ROE ovals and with the muffler delete it still sounds pretty tame.

By the way, the Random Tech Metal cats are much louder than stock. If you ever go with boost like SUN RA KAT, they may also be the only cats that will handle it. I'm going with the Roe S/C soon and am hoping it reduces the smell for whatever reason.

HUH??? Sean has his own cats (round and oval) that work perfectly with his SC system.

WUPASP says the random tech smell, and SUN KA RAT says they dont? When either of you get out of the car, do you smell like exhause fumes?
It all has to do wit the "tune" of the car. My VR4 is so clean it does not smell. Maybe my car is leaner than theirs. But my car has no rich smell or rotten egg smell, or even the normal cat smell.

No, not that I've ever sniffed myself after exiting the car. The smell I'm getting is mostly at WOT with the windows down and it is definitely associated with the cats as they were the only mod I did when the smell developed. It doesn't smell like any exhaust I've ever smelled previously. I do admit that I love the smell early in the morning, smells like......well, victory. /images/graemlins/supergrin.gif

When my Viper Tech drives it at the dealership or at his house, I like to get behind it just to hear how good it sounds and I have never noticed it smelling bad. I usually use Sunoco 94 octane gas. Maybe the brand of gas makes a difference?

Here's my take:

1.) Stock = no smell or very little.

2.) High-Flow = Moderate smell, and gets worse over time. My guess is the filtering of the cat decreases over time, but just a guess.

3.) No cats = You've been there....

** By nature, I think the Viper runs rich at certain RPM's, etc... An aftermarket computer controlled Viper, such as Kenny's (VEC2), may help to allieviate the rich conditions. I think the arrowdynamics also comes into play with the Viper. Notice how the dirt/exhaust fume buildup seem to come forward and attach to the rear of the Viper. For some reason, I think the fumes from the exhaust somehow find there way to the driver/passenger window.

I think you may have an exhaust leak. What car do you have? I can't believe in a rear-exit car you could smell anything while driving down the highway at WOT, only sitting at idle, and even then you'd prolly have to be in the garage or get out of the car.

Aside from that, I have the random techs IIRC, and mine don't smell, at least not normally. I can smell it a bit when I fire it up in the garage first thing, but thats it.

just thought i would comment here, i have always pulled the cats off of any hot rod i have ever had, and it never smelled. You could smell it was running a little rich at WOT, but other than that , nuthin!

I think you should be alright, but maybe Vipers are a little different cat-less. just my :twocents:
