I want to build a 9 second car.

Not a Viper. Maybe a 64 or 65 Chevy II. Something that will rocket down the strip. Forget the Viper. I want something I can put together and perform without spending a wad of cash. A good built small block with some gas should do the trick. Tub out the back and carry the front end down the track. That is my goal. Anyone ever built this type of car for the strip or anything else. What setup did you use and what #'s did you get? /images/graemlins/gr_driving3.gif

9 second car, been there, done that. From scratch. Would I do it again. No!

Look in the back of National Dragster and buy one as turn-key. roller, or one that they lost interest in. Much cheaper that way. With the money you will save buy buying it in any of the above mentioned conditions you can change it to your liking.

Example:

67 Chevy II
SS/IA 327/275
Jesel
Welds
Musinger
Spare parts
$20,000

John...There was a 9 second ATV running at the drags two weeks ago...course I couldn't run, because I didn't bring my soft top...but they would have allowed me to make a 10 second pass on a skateboard, butt naked, chugging a beer bong, no problem...But if I wanna run the RT, I need a thin piece of fabric over my head...
Gerald wait untill you see a snowmobile running 9's !

That will piss you off...

Jerome, good idea. Looks like there are some good cars to be had and I wouldn't have to go through the building process even though I enjoy working on the old iron. Chevy II's have always been a favorite of mine.
G, went to the strip last weekend and ran 11's with the top off and the no one ever said a thing. Us ******** aint that bright. :bonk:
Check your PM's JDAWG. That Mustang flies and is safe as they come.
Check out racingjunk.com. They have classifieds for tons of race cars already built.
There is no way to run a race car and not spend a bunch of cash, It is the nature of the beast, 20k you can get in it and 30k you can stay in it.

Gary, thanks for the site. They have everything a drag racer could want or need.

You would die if you knew how little $ it cost to go 9's with a sled. The sled is the most expensive part, from there it is just minor $'s and know-how.

Try www.vennom.com. Guy builds all glass Chevy II cars, 1st class. Going to be my next project, have looked at several of the cars he has built and they are top notch. Full interior, and a blown big block weighs in around 2400lbs.

There's a guy who works for me who intended on building a 8-9 second car for around 20k. It's almost done, and he's got almost 40k into it. /images/graemlins/freak3.gif

The advice about buying a well sorted car that already has timeslips where you want them is the best advice you can get if budget matters. It'll save you a bundle in re-inventing the wheel.

If however you want things done in a certain way and have to have a custom job to get it - forget a tight budget - triple whatever you think and you might just make that.

I've done the project thing and never again except where money was no object. Start with something that is already doing what you want - you'll get one for a fraction of what it cost somebody - that is your gain. An engine refresh is not a big deal. A car rebuild and engine/drivetrain re-spec is a huge deal.
Hennessey performance viper runs 8.93,Try that one on for size
Saw it make the 9.2 and 9.3 passes at BG. It is an impressive car. Unfortunately I can't say the same for the individual. Just my opinion.
