I know this has been covered before, but I have a couple questions. I'm in the market for a used Viper and want to know what one would be best for me. I see low miles 94-95's for under $40,000 regularly anymore. My question is this. For a guy somewhat on a budget, is a Gen I a good buy assuming it is low mile and with a warranty? Or would a Gen II be money better spent.

I've driven a Gen I, but never a Gen II, so I'd like to know how they compare, and if a Gen I is the right car for a guy who just wants a nice summer cruiser.

Thanks in advance fo any help. /images/graemlins/gr_driving3.gif

Gen 1 will be great for summer cruising, make sure to get a Viper with a warranty and with A/C (A/c is important for hot summer days). Most 94+ Vipers have A/C. The Gen 2's are great becuase they have better suspensions, power windows, locks, as well as an extra 50 horsepower. But if you need to stay true to your budget of under $40,000, I would try to get a 95 Rt with a warranty. If it was well kept, then you should have a great car! Good luck!!

i havent driven a genI, but i think that either way you cant go wrong. there are just more advancements in the genII. if you are looking to just cruise, then a genI rt-10 im sure would be great. and as vipernathan said, make sure it has a warranty!

The 96 RT/10 has the Gen II suspension, and 415HP... it does not have the roll-up windows nor the door locks. Nor does it have ABS and airbags (two more things to break IMHO).

The Gen II RT does have a nicer dash layout IMHO.

The 96 seems less prone to the head gasket problem..

If you are diligent you can pick up a nice 96 RT for right at or under 40K with a transferrable warranty. Especially being winter and a soft market.

I battled with Gen I vs Gen II for a long time... bottom line for me was I really do not want airbags... I can make up the 35 HP........AND I really wanted a Black RT with the Silver stripes... so I bought my 96 RT/10.

Good Luck!

Re: Future Viper Owner seeking advice. (Gen I or I

I would absolutely recommend the Gen II. This especially if you plan on doing any mods to the car. Many of us bought the car saying we were going to leave them stock. Most of us have modded them. The Gen I cars have a weak head gasket that needs to be replaced. Has less HP and a much more crude fit and finish. They are however beautiful cars, especially the side exhaust cars.
