This is the sound of a 12000 RPM supercharged V16 used in a 1953 Formula 1 car fielded by Fangio's BRM team. It was only 1.5 liters but made 485 HP, which was pretty fantastic in those days. It is probably one of the weirder, cooler sounding engines I've ever heard.
It's about 2.5 MB. It's poorly edited but worth a listen if you have a few minutes to kill. It helps if you run your computer through a good stereo, or through headphones. The start is very cool, but definitely listen to it all the way through, some of the best parts are at the end, starting at about the 2-minute mark. As one of the guys commented when I posted it to a local racing board, "That made my nads tingle." LOL
