How bad is the wheel? Got a pic? Never hurts to try. if it screws up you can just have it re-cleared anyway.

Oh it's not bad at all. Just wondering which is the lesser of two evils!

If I sand down the offending area with 1500 grit, can I use some spray can clear to make it look good as new?

You likely could but I would fear you may make it worse. good luck
