93 rt-10runs hotttt!!!

i was hoping you guys might be able to help. i just bought a 93 rt-10 with 30,000 miles, it is bone stock and runs perfect except......it runs soooo hot. at steady speed it runs a steady 190-200 never hoter. but around town it heats up fast. running up into the yellow(225 or better?) it stays thier until i can get to a steady speed above 50ish.i have had to turn the car off because it was about to touch the red(even tried to turn the heater on bit but in texas heat ill just turn it off and wait) i "burped" the radiator and it helps but only to slow down the proccess not eliminate it. i also removed the plasic tube under the tubes (some sort of heat riser/silencer i assume) and again it sure helped slow down the proccess but not eleminate it. the radiator is at a proper 60%water(distilled)40 antifreez and is perfectly clean. i run castrol 10/30. please help. thanx

ps. the cheak engine light comes on at around 215ish i have heard that this makes the engine run in a differant "mode" any advise?

First do a code check and find out why the engine light comes on.
Second, make sure your radiator hoses are circulating water only - burp
any air pockets. I wrapped my coolant tubes that flow above the exhaust with
the aluminized insulation sheets that you can get from JEGS or Summit -
Even though the insulation has an adhesive backing - secure with the stainless
tie straps that they sell. If you don't have the 99 upgraded fan - you
might invest in one. I completely rewired my high speed fan circuit -
too complicated to go into here, but if you upgrade the fan and want a manual
high speed - let me know. Tap into the heater hose and install a flush tee
that you can get at AutoZone for about a dollar. This is good to burp the air
since it is the high point of your cooling system - you can also add extra
coolant through it. .... Did I leave anything out?

Oh, you might also add a pint of Water Wetter or the the stuff Royal Purple
sells to add to coolant - helps coolant transfer heat better.

Run mobile one oil, you also might want to pressure test the cooling system.
I remember my 94 ran pretty hot but not that bad. Getting stuck in traffic on a hot day was murder. Good thing it is never hot and the traffic is never bad in LA...

One thing. The plastic propeller used in the water pumps were found to be defective, causing the Viper to overheat. Dodge had to change vendors because the problem was so bad. You may want to invest in a new water pump all together. Also you might wnat to buy a new radiator.
Put in a 160 thermostat and burp all the air out , pressure test and water wetter helps. if you are near Austin , take it to David Weaver at Maxwell Dodge, he will fix it!
The best way to burp a 92-93 is to use the speed bleeders that splice into your heater valve lines. My 93 always ran on the warm side, but only occasionally did it ever flash the warning lamp. This was only in the summer - either in slow, heavy traffic; or at the track in 95+ heat.

A cooler thermostat will not change the rate at which excess heat is rejected. Only more airflow, more coolant capacity, or a more efficient heat exchanger will cool better.
93 cars had the bad head gasket. Have you had yours replaced? Maybe you are getting a one way leak of exhaust gasses into your cooling system under load. There is a test you can do to check for exhaust gasses in your cooling system.
I know it sounds crazy , but after I put in the 160 thermostat in my 95 , it runs much cooler all the time. Maybe it was the burping , but it runs about 190 -195 in traffic, in Texas, in the summer , with the A/C on. :pissed:

Take a pressure tester when the car is cool hook it up and when the car gets to running temp see if the pressure is in the red...
i have burped the system about 5 times in the last week and it sure helps but eventualy it is going to get hottt!!. Perhaps someone knows a good wrench in San Antonio.
Nohsreg2000,,

When Ldy and I have ours maintenanced, we take ours to the Gunn Dodge Dealer off of I-35. They have been very good to us.
Do you have a particular tech you use? I sure do appreciate the tip.
they have a Viper Tech. The crew that works on them only works on the vipers. those guys knew all kinds of shit about the car. They let you come back into the shop area and watch your car being worked on, if you so desire. They explain everything to you. Most importatnt they don't joy ride your stuff. Like I said they treat us great.
Gunn has been very bad to Viper owners in the past. You're the only one I know who uses them.
well, i know this guy named Honda Heath. works for Gunn upper managemnet. he too is a viper owner. so he takes a interst in making sure that we a taken care of. very nice individual. in fact we go to his. maybe thats why. dunno.
