I was talking to my Viper tech about not being able to shift from 5th to 6th.

4 - 5 OK.
5 - 6 OK.
6 - 5 Nope.
6 - 4 OK.

The only cure is to replace the tranny.

So yesterday I decided to try again. (Going into 6th is NOT common for me, even on the freeway, but I decided to test the downshift again.)

6 - 5 Nope. Like hitting a solid stop. I did this about three times. On the fourth time, I just revved the engine out of frustration and it slid reluctantly into 5th. (I wasn't even sure I was actually in 5th at that time - thought I might be in 3rd - but no, 5th!)

I tried the downshift two more times and it got easier each time. Today I tried it twice and the 5 - 6 shift was as smooth as glass.

What's up with this?

While this is true, it has no relevance to the post. /images/graemlins/supergrin.gif

I'm just SOOOOOOO glad the tranny is functioning properly. This has been bugging me for months. Whatever it was, it was locked up pretty solid. And whatever it was, it appears to have worked its way through it.

Change your fluids once in a while! ;)
The car is only almost two years old with 14,000 miles.

I think it's more of a downshift-5-to-6 once in a while thing.
OK if I HAVE to be serious...I have also found that the tranny is funky. It would seem that if the shift pathway is not used it somehow stiffens. I have the same problem with upshifting from 5 to 6. The first couple of times it's reluctant, and then it smooths out. Of course, the previous STILL doesn't help answer why. So that's the reason I stick to sarcasm. (And I'm older than you!)

City may be on to something here.

First, are you sure you were in the Viper when it happened?

Second, are you sure you were even driving?
Jeez, Chuck. You're not THAT far away from me (age wise). Are you telling me that you have started to notice some times where you weren't sure where you were or what you were doing? Is this the voice of experience talkin' here?

Man, if that's the case, you gotta be wonderin'. At this point, you don't know if you'll EVER be as old as I am. /images/graemlins/supergrin.gif

I can't believe how smoothly this thing shifts now. I tried it a couple of times this morning and it's like a different animal. I guess I'll have to remember to go through ALL the gears - both up and down - a little more often. :arcade:

I had a similar problem with my 98 and we did change the tranny. If the tech suggests it, get it done , as it is a quick fix. I would also suggest you change the fluid ---- my personal opinion is 14K is way too long to go with the torque generated by 488 cubes of Snakepower.

Look, a year is a mile. If I have a chance to bash somebody for being older than me I'm going to take advantage of it. Gawd knows the opportunities get fewer with the years.

BTW The Pimp is an old bastage too. Interesting that you both had the same problem.

I'm getting a new tranny right now in my 2000 GTS as it was kind of grabbing gears despite the clutch being totally pressed. Like the blocking rings were hindering movement into gears too. The Viper tech told me that it sometimes happens and a different type of fluid will change the problem, but in this case they will just swap a tranny.
