3 Gateway Vipers get into the 10\'s....

I put together another Test & Tune Drag Race Day at Gateway International Raceway the was held today (Friday Oct. 10th).

There were about a dozen Vipers attending and racing with a total attendence of 39 cars..

Three of the Vipers made it into the 10's running several 10 second runs each with all running Nitrous.

The quickest was Kevin Linebaugh in his Blue & White 97 GTS with a best ET of 10.42 @ 132.91 mph with a 1.623 sixty foot time. It's got TNT headers, Borla 3 inch exhaust, a K&N air box and a BTR Nitrous/ Propane System running Slicks & skinnies on Purner wheels.
(I've posted his 10.44 @ 132.91 time slip because they only gave him one copy of the 10.42 time slip).

Next quickest was myself, Rich Detert in my Red & Silver 97 GTS with a 10.71 @ 130.33 mph with a 1.52.24 sixty foot time. It's got 3 inch exhaust (stock manifolds), S & B air filters and a BTR Nitrous/Propane System on BFG Drag Radials.

The next quickest was Joe Donovan in his Black 99 GTS with a 10.78 @ 127.50 mph with a 1.656 sixty foot time.
It's a TNT car that has been reworked a little and is running a Nitrous Express system.

There were several Vipers running in the high 11's on just motor,
Dave Naeger ran an 11.68 with his 99 R/T 10.

There were Videos taken at the track, as soon as a copy becomes available to me I'll have it posted where it can be seen.

Everyone who attended said they had a great time.
There was a wide variety of cars attending that were running some really fast times. There were 3 cars in the 8's, 3 cars in the 9's, quite a few 10 second cars and several 11 second cars (several Vipers).

It was a really good day at the track for all!!!

Impressive! :thumb: Your 1.52 sixty foot time is impressive. Can you please shed some details about the cars. Especially, what nitrous shots were you running?? As well as the other 2 guys.

Re: 3 Gateway Vipers get into the 10\'s....

The mods on my car are Smooth Tubes, 3 inch cats and exhaust (bent at an exhaust shop using Magnaflow mufflers), S&B Air filters, and the BTR Nitrous/Propane system running 52 jets on the Nitrous & 40 jets on the Propane.
There's a recalibrated MSD RPM Window switch controling the Nitrous System (on at 3,000 rpm & off at 5,800 rpm).
I've got one of my 3 inch short throw shifter shafts with the stock shifter knob.
I had an MGW Gripper in the car but was having problems with the rubber spinning around on the ball with the way I was holding it when I jammed the shifter towards 3rd (causing a missed gear).
Being an old time Mopar guy I'm used to a Pistol Grip shifter and the factory leather knob lets me grip the shifter the way I'm used to.
I love the look of the Gripper, it just feels unnatural to hold the shifter knob from above to me.

I've listed the mods above that I know about on the other two Vipers.

Kevin was sneaky with his car. He started out making runs on just the motor running high 11's. I was standing on the return road talking with his wife Mary and Joe Donovan (Viper Tech from King Dodge) and the were discussing how another dealership had screwed up her 98 RT/10 and what Joe had done to straighen it out. Mary made a comment about Kevin had just finished installing the Nitrous on his car. We were both like "Kevin put Nitrous on his car?"

Right at that time Kevin pull up to the line for a run. He blasted off a 10.87 @ 131 mph.
He drove down the return road and as he stopped we gave him a little applause. I said "So you put Nitrous on the car?". He says "Nitrous, what nitrous" while he's wearing a huge grin. (Kevin has a cover over the cargo area to hide it).

Re: 3 Gateway Vipers get into the 10\'s....

The best dyno so far has been what's listed in my signature, 567.7 RWHP & 749 Ft Lbs RW Torque.

I'm planning on changing the jets to 56 on the Nitrous and 46 on the Propane (a suggestion from Tom Welch), but there wasn't time to dyno it and check the Air/Fuel ratio before our day at the track.
It being too lean would be a bad thing. :bonk:

I forgot to mention before, the drag radials were at 16 psi.

It was a wild feeling in first gear, it was accelerating so hard I felt like my eyes were being pushed back in my head pretty much all the way through first gear.

It was awesome! What a rush! /images/graemlins/gr_driving3.gif

Nice Runs Guys!

We raced today at Gainesville at our local club event.

Lee Saunders with his BTR 750 was low e.t of the event with a 9.89....beating my wheelspinning 10.01 at 145 mph.

Doug Levin, driving a customers yellow RT ran high MPH at 147(10.25 best e.t.) with a SC-NOS combo...a very stout sounding car that can go quicker.

I'm replacing my 3 year old tires on Monday as my 60' times were terrible..3 back to back 1.55's spinning all the way through first gear.

Again,

Nice going...especially you, Rich seeing that you are running stock exhaust manifolds!!

WOW, Sounds like an AWESOME day at the strip!!!

Congratulations... Very cool.

After I get my wheels I will be looking into the Nitrous....

Anything you or your friends would do different with their nitrous systems???

Thanks,
Jason

Re: 3 Gateway Vipers get into the 10\'s....

Other than trying the larger jetting I'm not planning any changes on the Nitrous (except cleaning up the wiring routing a little).
My definite need is headers when the budget allows and I'll take off the cats.
The state emission inspection is due this month and the plates will be good for 2 years till the next time they're due. It may pass fine without them, but I figured once I get it the inpection that's the perfect time to take them off.

Kevin has actually sold his Nitrous System and is planning on getting a Sean Roe Supercharger. He thinks it may not be as fast, but it'll have the power all the time.

Joe Donovan is still trying to work all the bugs out of his car.
He was playing with the jetting at the track that day some.
What suprises me is he says he's having to shift into 5th gear so he's not hitting the rev limiter at the end of the qtr. mile.
I don't understand that one as he still has 3.07 gears is the rear....
He has an aluminum flywheel and it revs fast and that explains his having to shift sooner in first because of it reving faster.
He said that it's dynoed 480 RWHP on just motor and 577 RWHP & 675 RW Torque on Nitrous.
The having to use 5th gear just doesn't make sense to me considering it still has 3.07 gears...
Anyone have any ideas or explainations??? :help:

Re: 3 Gateway Vipers get into the 10\'s....

Jason,
Like Rich said I am still working the bugs out...I had only made a pull on a 125( N)/150(F) shot going by air/fuel. I put in a 150(N)/200(F) on my 10.78 pass, and everyone watching said it was fat going down the track. I need to make a few more pulls with the bigger jets and set everything on a wideband. I think there is 50's in the car with the right set up. I have some other issues with fifth gear I need to figure out first, I am shifting off of a 5800 chip and going into fifth at around 1000 to 1100 foot. I tried running it out in forth but I hit the limiter before the 1320...I lost 5 mph by shifting into fifth. If I go to a 3.55 or a 3.73 I will be in fifth and I don't know if a T-56 will take 700 foot pounds of torque in overdrive. I will say that the propane set up make some killer power, possibly more than a similar set up wet kit like mine. Overall, it was very cool to see 3 vipers deep into the 10's all on the same day.
Later,
Joe

Re: 3 Gateway Vipers get into the 10\'s....

Do you guys have HD half shafts?

I've only run on street tires, I have a 150 shot NX setup and I'm sure that I'd shave a lot off of my 1/4 mile times with drag radials or slicks, but I'm not eager to break anything as the Viper is my daily driver.

Also, do all of you guys have rollbars, safety loops, 5 point belts, etc needed to run 11s or faster, or is your track not picky?

The moment I nipped into the high 11s I was told to slow down or I'd get kicked off the track.

Great runs by the way!

Re: 3 Gateway Vipers get into the 10\'s....

Rich:

Rev limiter question - Maybe it is not the rev limiter, does he have a MSD window switch, my switch was off by 10%. This was a new switch calibrated for the viper by MSD. Ten percent is 600 rpm's at the end of the quarter. When I called MSD their answers seemed to indicate it was a common problem.

It is hard to check because it is a solid state switch which does not have an abrupt change in resistance like a mechanical relay. I ended up going to 6600 rpm pills so I could finish the quarter on the bottle. I am running 3.33's with ET's. The ET's are 26.2 diameter. If he was on pilots with 3.07's, that would be the approximately equivalent to my final drive ratio.

It was a great time.....

Rick, Joe, and Kevin flew down the track. Dave ran that 11.68 on street tires! I didn't run (had to work most of the day), but I wish I did.

THE TRACK WAS STICKY AS SHIT!

It was one of those days that anyone would put up some sweet times!

Re: 3 Gateway Vipers get into the 10\'s....

Man, what a day! The track was perfect, the air was perfect. I had a 1.77 60' ending up with a 11.68 at 118 on well worn pilots. I'm still pumped about that. My car has B&B headers, catback, factory half shafts and k&N's. VEC 1 on 0/0 settings...I'm not convinced it does anything. I do have an Autoform Rollbar and TeamTechs. Ray also put up good numbers for a creampuff with multiple 11 sec runs including a 11.81 with headers, flywheeland catback even with yellow paint:)

Thanks again Rich. Watch out Houston, we're after your "Fastest Vipers in America" title.

I've got the BTR halfshafts in my car, I'm not sure what the other guys are running in theirs. I'm pretty sure they've upgraded, but not sure what brand.

I rented the track as a Test & Tune and all we were allowed to do are technically By Runs (single car at a time running down the track).
By renting the track this way there is no Tech inspection done on the cars.
It works out to $75 per car renting the track this way.

If the track it rented for an actual event, the cars must pass a complete NHRA Tech inspection. The track rental fee is higher also ($4,700 a day) because of the required insurance they must provide. There's no limit on the number of cars this way.

The weather was perfect!
The track was sticky, I'm still pumped up about the whole day. /images/graemlins/gr_driving3.gif

Re: 3 Gateway Vipers get into the 10\'s....

Rich, thanks for the info. I've heard about groups getting together to rent a local track, but as you mentioned it's pricey so you have to get a lot of people together to drop the per-car costs.
Still, I would gladly jump in if someone local rented a track. Then you would get many more runs in and not worry about NHRA restrictions.

It sounds like it was great fun for everyone.

Nascar Dave,
I can readily feel a noticable improvement of the VEC1 on my car, and mine is at a mild +8, -8 setting. It only gained about 11RWHP and 8 RWTQ, but you could easily see from the dyno that the power curve was improved.

And more importantly it eliminated part-throttle stumbling, and improved both part throttle acceleration and high rev pull.

But I had mine dialed in on the dyno.
