Help! Valve stem issue on 19" Forgeline VR1

Took my GTS to the local tire shop to have a new set of Super Sports put on yesterday. Of course they managed to break a valve stem on one of my VR1s. Problem is they checked around and the valve stem is smaller than what is available these days. Contacted Forgeline and they confirmed that they don't carry that size stem since discontinuing the VR1's.

Any recommendations of where I might check to secure these or is taking the wheel to a machine shop and having them tap the stem opening to accommodate a larger valve stem an option?

Thanks.

Brad

After looking more closely, I don't think there is enough material in the stem pocket to machine it for a larger stem.

You would have to open up the counterbore more. Is that set up for a rubber pop-in type or a metal one with a nut on the inside?

Set-up for the metal style with the nuts/washers.

I wonder if motorcycle wheels might use smaller stems? I need to contact a motorcycle shop and see if they may have an option?

Might be worth a look. I just googled metal valve stem and there are plenty of choices. Also it doesn't look like it would be rocket science to enlarge that counterbore. Could probably even do it be hand with a hand drill if you have the right bit.

Forgeline may not carry it anymore, but they should at least give you specs or a vendor to contact.

Thanks Dave. I will have to do some more research, just sucks that I have to do all this legwork because the damn tire shop can't do theirs correctly.

I suggest contacting someone that supports/supported Vipers especially for tracking, such as Archer racing, or Dan Cragin, or Tom Sessions or Jon B at partsrack. Those wheels (at least the 18" ones) were pretty popular, and I doubt that they have been scrapped. Jon may have a source or know of a standard fix.

Good idea-- I also have a different set of forgelines that I got from archer racing with my slicks on them. I am about certain they use the same valve stems. Im too lazy to walk down to the basement to check but Archer may be able to help.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. Always appreciated! I measured the stem diameter and it is .235 and there appears to be online sources for this size. Don't know if I will get to it today, but will update as soon as I have more to share.

I went ahead and sent an email to JonB to see if he could help. That is who I bought my new Super Sports from too

It will be at Vertiport in Chicago. It should be fun. Get 1.5 hours of instructed driving and I guess they make a professionally edited action video of you driving to share online. Sure that is more for their promotional purposes, but I am ok with it to get the video

Well, the search is over. Of all people it was actually my wife that came through and secured me 5 of the correct stems this evening. She works for a large automotive supplier (ZF) and one of her engineers races a dragster and vintage super stock. She asked him and he had 5 sitting in his shop that he couldn't use, so he gave them to her

Thanks to everyone on this thread, JonB and Mark from Forgeline for your help and suggestions.
