Price to rebuild differential?

I have a feeling the rear end on my Paxton Viper is toast. It makes horrendous noises when you turn...you can actually feel something going wrong in the rear around a turn. I doubt it is a simple fluid change. Also when you drive the car and are in the throttle you can feel as if power is being transferred form the left to the right rear tire as you have to fight the car, instantly goes away when you let off the throttle and lastly when you get on it the car gets sideways instantly....not like a little sideways like what happens when you lose traction but instantly the back end kicks out to the right. I've had a paxton SRT10 before and this doesn't feel right. The car is very low mileage, around 5k miles. What are my options?

What is a good price for a used Gen IV differential if I can find one? How much does a rebuild cost if I have to go that route?

Define rebuild according to your definition. Then a cost can be established.

Why not take the least expensive route first...With just 5K on the clock, hard to imagine the diff would be toast. The sound you are experiencing usually is fixed with there is a fluid swap.

I have the fluid and am planning on replacing it this weekend....I just don't think the stuff can work miracles (but I may be wrong?)

How do I go about doing that? What do I look for? Doing a complete fluid change on the car this weekend.

Jack up the rear of the car and look at the axles that bolt to the differential and see if they are on securely and bolted in. I lost an axle on my GEN II already and the car started making noise and acted like a bad diff. Put your hand on the axle and look for play in it, and if you are not sure, take some pics or video and we can help, but if you are really lost you should just give your car to me.

The minute you drain your diff oil, you will know if you need it rebuilt or not.

I don't hear words like, clunk, creek, jolt, hum.

Could really just need fluid, sounds like clutch packs, or dry clutch packs.
Drain it onto a disposable aluminum turkey pan, take pics if its not obvious.

FYI if no oil comes out thats a good indicator as well...

The Gen 3 diffs are junk anyway. Best bet is to get a Gen 4 diff, maybe with some gears. Take out Gen 4 diffs are cheap enough. Call Ryan at 800-338-4002.

I lost teeth before racing on 10 and 12 bolts and sometimes it would be whole teeth, but they do not drain out and the fluid looks pretty decent.

The diffs on gen 3's will literally crush the spider gears into fine metallic powder along with chunks depending how bad it is. The higher the HP the faster the carnage happens. It's not an if but a matter of when. The minute you drain the diff oil, that last stream of oil that comes out will tell you all you need to know.
