Viper or Ferrari 348 or 355

I was thinking about buying a 1990's Ferrari 348 or F355. But I have just started to consider a 3rd gen Viper. What do you think about a comparison of those? I think the Viper would be cheaper to maintain. I plan to do all the work myself on either car. I'm thinking the Viper is easier to work on. For an F355 you have to pull the motor to do the timing belt every 30K miles for example.

If you have to consider the cost of ownership on any Ferrari then a Ferrari is not for you.

If you have to consider working on a Ferrari yourself to save a buck, then Ferrari ownership is not for you.

If you are guessing a Ferrari is going to be harder to work on than a Viper, a Ferrari is not for you.

A gen 3 Viper is your bogey.

Fam owned a 355 long long ago, pile of shit, heck just ask any owner. Even the interior literally starts to come unglued and fall apart. I have a guy in my neighborhood that works on older Ferrari as a hobby/biz to fix up and flip (or work on for owners), does a lot of 355 and even he would say to stay away from them. Think he has a 328 there right now at his house. And if you own the floppy paddle trans, forget about it, last I heard if even the pump fails in it your looking at a 10-15k repair bill alone. I have a pic somewhere in an album or packed up of my grandma back then in the 355 lol.

Viper is easy to work on, basically as reliable as a Honda. The questions you asked show Ferrari ownership isn't for you, hell not even comparable, Viper will destroy them in any performance category.

If you plan on whispering to the car then don't get a Viper. When you get behind the wheel of a Viper you must be in charge or it will bite you and kill you.

That said... Viper all the way... hehe

Its a shame that is the story with the F355... I always loved the car and the prices on them lately had me looking and researching myself. That sure would be a fun car to own, at a glance. But digging deeper I found that most owners dont really get to enjoy them.

It is a shame, its a good looking car, sounded incredible not even its successor (360 nor the 430) sounded like it, unfortunately it's a complete pile of shit. Forget the mechanics, even the fit/finish build quality is more like a kit car then a Gen II Viper

Since it's in this section, you'd have to be high on crack to take either over a Gen III Viper or especially a Gen IV

Having driven all 3 there is no comparison in performance.

However, if you are incredibly in love with the 355 then get it. It is one of the best looking cares out there (IMHO) even if it is a pile of shit.

Only you know the real reasons why you are buying the car, so what is the real value of our opinion? Go on on FChat and ask the same question, then wait for them to tell you what a pig and piece of shit the viper is.

If you really want a 355 (or any older Ferrari), find a higher mileage one that's had all preventiative measures taken and maintenance. Stay away from low mileage barely driven ones, those are generally the owners who think oh hey I have low miles and barely drive it I don't need to do this or that or maintain that blah blah blah. Then they sell the car, to which the new owner finds out he has a cluster fuck bank account draining car b/c it wasn't fixed or taken care of properly.

Maybe there would be a small niche market for an automotive aftermarket company to take the F355 under wing and develop cost effective alternatives to the overpriced Ferrari parts that commonly need replacement?

I would go Viper. The older F cars are a PITA. That said the 458 is amazing. I had 3 Gen 3 - all bullet proof

Saw one a couple days ago at an exotic car shop, selling for $25,000. Owner asked if I might be interested, and I laughed. Needed a ton of TLC, I can only imagine how often I'd be whipping out my checkbook.

I own a F430, and have owned a few vipers. If you want to own a car that you can drive and not worry about it falling apart as you drive it get the Viper or look at a F360 or F430. The 360 is light yrs better built then the 348 and 355's, and the 430 is a huge step past the 360. The 430 has timing chains so you don't have to pull the motor to change the belts ever 2yrs. F430's are about as bullet proof as you can get in a exotic car. Problems with them are few and far between.

A viper is a car you can have more fun with and not worry as much about like parking it in a parking lot lol, but a Ferrari is well a Ferrari.

A Ferrari F355 for $25,000 is a perfect candidate for something like a twin turbo LSx engine conversion! Probably sell the stock engine and trans to fund half or more of the project!
