gen 2 fog light lenses

Hey, I was just wondering if someone can tell me why some vipers have the fog light lense covers right at the end of the fog light hole, and some don't. Or do some people remove the cover and jus have the lense further back

and can the covers come off without looking ugly where it was mounted? I like the open look of the fog lights better
