Single turbo gen 2 need some help

I am looking to pick up a viper within the next couple of months and the plan is to do a single turbo. Its going to be a DD and before you tell me that I cant or should not my last car was a turboed 05 GTO with a th400 in it. I only drive in town and im not a little ***** about things like most people are.

For tunning I will be using the AME EMS unless someone has something better

I have a turbonetics T6 .96 ar (I am willing to change the ar) Y2K 80mm which was going to go on the GTO. I also have the fuel system which is good to 1100 wheel. My question is if the backpresure to boost ratio going to be high because the Y2K has a 89mm turbine wheel. I am planing on keeping this car as a 6speed so I would like something that would spool fast. I am looking to make about 950 to 1000 whp when I build the motor. My other question would be about how much power would a 97 - 99 GTS hold on the stock forged motor?

I think the consensus is around 800HP for a stock forged motor. If anyone believes this to be false please chime in, but I think that's ballpark.

There was a single turbo setup in the classifieds for a while. You may PM him to get his insight on the whole deal.

Good luck in your hunt and on your build!

I think the biggest issue is the life span of the turbo. Them large frame boys seem to die a lot faster than their T4 counterparts....possibly due to the heavier shafts and high bearing loads. I'd sell the turbonetics and shoot for twin standard journal 70mm's.

yup, around 750-800 on stock motor is the limit, especially for a DD.

go thru the heads and put some good parts in there to be safe. im told the valve springs are a weak link

Buy the black/silve stripe, single turbo viper. If you want this weekend I can snap a few more pics of it. It's not far from my house.

With an 89mm turbine wheel and .96 AR, I'd expect around a 1.8-2.0 EBR assuming 12:1 A/F, 75% compressor efficiency, 300 degree delta T across the turbine, 900 crank HP, and 12 psi to get there. Your turbine power requirement is 86 shaft horsepower. I assumed a 300 degree delta T across the turbine, as that seems to be around what I have seen on the TT cars. Can't exactly say how a single would effect that, but I bet that's still in the ballpark. BTW, 10 psi (800 or so crank HP) would probably net you an EBR around 1.5-1.7. Safe limit on the forged engines is probably 900 RWHP or more if your tuning is reallly good and your turbo system is efficient (single Y2k-80 does not really meet that last criteria). Your average dyno tune would probably lower that limit to the afforementioned 800 RWHP.

Thanks for all the info guys. I guess I am just going to sell this turbo, the only reason why I was considering it was because I have it laying around and its brand new.

No thanks on that silver and black one its a great deal but I like to build my own cars even if it end up costing 20k more. I am not the kind of person that just takes it to a shop to do it. That just seems like if I was playing some fucking video game or something and just clicking on what I wanted.

If anyone has any pics of single turbo vipers I would really like to take a look at them but dont go drive somewhere to take them.

The Former PFR thanks for the very good brake down. What would you suggest as far as turbo goes, I was thinking maybe a 91mm gt55

I wish I could build my own cars but me & mechanical work don't mix. But hey, that's why I have my Viper tech! His name shall remain confidential but his alias is "The Ghost."

VZ...Love the attitude! You will have constant goose bumbs with this car...especially if you start on a line of DIY projects! Can't say enough about how much fun these cars are to work on. And EASY as well. Now go buy a Snake!

Good luck finding a place to install a turbo that large and keep the car a DD. The only place that seems to work is where your blower motor/AC stuff is so I guess your DD is not going to have AC.

In a GTS that is going to be a blast but what do I know you had a GTO with a turbo on it you must know best.

What the PFR said + add a water/meth kit while you're add it. That will allow you to turn up the boost (every now and then) without risk of breaking the stock forged motor on those year cars. As for turbo's, anything from a Promod 90 to a 55-101 would fit the bill for a single application though on second thought the 101mm is a bit overkill on a stock motor. Would be better off if you had the motor redone with pistons/heads/roller rockers ect...

I am planning on building the motor down the road and my roads seem to be pretty short. Im thinking maybe 5 or 6 months after the build is done its just a matter of how board I get with the stock motor. I really would like to keep the AC if possible its going to be the first car that I would of left it alone. I dont mind relocating the radiator or any parts of the cooling system.

would anyone know if anybody makes electric water pumps for these cars or maybe bulkhead plates to run external elec pump just in case I have to move the cooling system for room.

Let me know exactly what your goals and plans are and I'll try and sort out a turbo suggestion for you. I would suggest you call Justin at Comp Turbo and bounce my very general sizing suggestions off of him. He can get much more specific than I can, but we generally share the same turbo sizing philosophies.

I hope you work on cars better than you spell. :lmao:

Okay but seriously, just go with a TT setup. Why? Because it is much more proven and there are a good number of cars out there that have been running them for a while. Unless I'm mistaken, there have only been a few guys to ever run a single turbo in a Gen II...and I think there is a reason for that. Good luck!
