I live in a relatively small town in Michigan and for sure there are not many VIPERS.. When I brought the car in for Inspection before I purchased it to the "certified viper Tech"@ the Dodge dealer, He acted like he had never seen one.. I just thought he was excited about mine but after reviewing thier inspection report I am not convinced that they know what they are doing with a viper...It almost look like a grease monkey fluid level report.
Through the forums recommendations, I just purchased a set of chrysler service manuals for my 1997 RT/10 on ebay... . I have a friend who is a great mechanic but has never worked on a viper. My car is definately idleing between 300 and 500 RPM's and the Certified Viper Tech said nothing about that....In Neutral or in Gear it almost feels like it wants to stall sometimes but never does...I just want to increase my idle by a few hundred RPM's .
Am I making a mistake to have my friend (who has never failed me with my Camaro or Durango) look at my Viper with no previous experience working on a viper but provided with all the manuals? I am not so sure that the Dodge Tech has any experience with actual Vipers...
Driving around today my operating temp was upwards 200 degrees.. What is normal?
I will feel so much better when I know what is normal about my Precious Viper...
Today, I had someone who had the right of way stop and wave me through, I am sure just because I was driving a Viper... That is just CRAZY!
a local mechanic/friend of mine does MOST of the work on my car. (not performance related) the ONLY "viper tech" i have to use it chuck tator who is a good hour away, the local viper techs can KMA, they aint touching my car.
do you have any build info on this car ? does it have any head work or cam ? how old is the battery ? IAC ?
the car idles at 5-600 rpms IIRC
200 is fine.

200 degrees is fine. As others have said, the car is fairly straight forward to work on. I'm certainly no Viper tech, but after owning the car for a couple of months, I've done a complete fluid change front to rear, installed headers and new high flow cats, and done a complete brake pad change and bleed. You have the manuals, so your half way there. If your friend is a good mech, he can more than handle 90% of what needs to be done.
Trust the manuals, you can do a lot more than you think you can. These cars are pretty easy to work on and the best part is, if you get stuck, just come on here or VCA and there are a lot of folks that know tons about Vipers and can help you out.
If my memory serves me right, "Viper Tech" school is but a few days. Hardly makes you an expert.
My car runs 220 all the time but I live where the temperature is 90 in the winter. I think I've tried/trying/inventing/modifying every cooling thing you can do on a Gen 2. Feel free to ask me questions. I've got a helluva test ground LOL.
You guys are the best... Feels good to know I have a support team...After listening to the you tube videos of exhaust before and after it is pretty clear I need to do some mods.. But being a computer analyst, garbage in garbage out, I need to make sure the basics are running before I make any changes...
IF you buddy has access to a computer data scanner [ not a code reader ] and can at least get generic data, give him a shot.
Basic functions like Fuel trims, iac %, tps, load are common with all cars. If he understands the basic functions he will be able to get you fixed up.
Just use common sense and keep it simple.
Just as a heads up, when the battery is a bit long in life it causes a ton of strange issues, I've found surging/hunting from very low idle to be one of them. This can be problematic if the prior owner never replaced the battery and didn't "enjoy" the vehicle much.
The only good one that I know of is at Dick Scott Dodge in Plymouth, MI.
The tech is very knowledgeable , keeps my ride in top shape and the service manager treats you like family and your Viper- like it's made out of gold. I would not trust the so called tech's at any of my local dealerships to do anything other than an oil change, and that I do myself. It's worth the drive for me as I don't have a lift .
