Looking for a GEN I or II Input Please

I'm looking for a GEN I or II Vipers and I was wondering if you guys could help me out some with a bunch of questions I have.

-Are the GEN I the only ones with the funny plastic windows?

-Is there a certain year to avoid? ( I heard the cabins got really hot with the early models do to an undersized firewall)

-Are there any known defects with any of the mechanicals? Say,sleeves cracking per say?

-How many miles can a typical Viper go w/o an engine rebuild?

-I've seen a bunch of aftermarket products to keep your Viper cool. What vendors and parts do you recommend?

-How many miles can an average driver get out of a clutch? (I like to give my cars a serious go once or twice a week)

Thanks for your time.

Yep. Gen. IIs have power windows.

-Is there a certain year to avoid? ( I heard the cabins got really hot with the early models do to an undersized firewall)
If you want ABS, go with 2001-2002. If you want to do forced induction or nitrous, go with 1992-1999.

-Are there any known defects with any of the mechanicals? Say,sleeves cracking per say?
Door hinges tend to fail, the hatch struts on GTSs go bad, but the big one are head gaskets on Gen. Is. If you look at one ask if it's been done.

-How many miles can a typical Viper go w/o an engine rebuild?
There are guys with 100k miles on a well-maintained car with no rebuild. If you take care of it it'll last.

-I've seen a bunch of aftermarket products to keep your Viper cool. What vendors and parts do you recommend?
There are a ton. Early Gen. Is benefit from upgrading the cooling system to a Gen. II with an upgraded fan, radiator and relocating the coolant bottle. Cut the cats off. Replace side sill insulation. Lower thermostat. Vent the side sills.

-How many miles can an average driver get out of a clutch? (I like to give my cars a serious go once or twice a week)
My Gen. I needed a clutch at 50k miles, but it'd been to the 1/8 mile track a few times before I got it. My new GTS has an aftermarket clutch and is going strong at 25k miles.

Thanks for your time.

Perfect that's exactly the type of response I was looking for.

How do you guys pass smog when you cut the cats off?

Where can I get these lower thermostats?

Are Vipers easy cars to do regular maintenance work like oil changes, air filters and such? Is there a Bentley manual or equivalent that a newb like me could use for basic d.i.y.?

Put high flow cats on the car.

Any viper performance shop.

Easy to maintain and find filters......these forums will help you when you want to work on the car. Just use the search function.

Is there a head gasket to retrofit on a GEN I Viper to replace the thin one or does Dodge offer there own superseded part?

How much $$$ is it retrofit a new head gasket on a GEN I? Would it be okay to buy a Gen I w/ the original head gasket with 50k on it?

Is it hard to retrofit the cooling system from a Gen II to a Gen I as a d.i.y.? Can anyone link me a spot to buy a kit(if available)?

Thanks

The Gen I and Gen II radiators are pretty close to the same. IN 99 they change the mounting points and the fan design(better airflow), but other than that they are interchangeable(excluding 92/93 cars).

the head gaskets are $350, but you will need additional gaskets too. Get them from Chuck Tator, 914-763-3136.

Whatever model year you decide to purchase make sure you have a Viper oriented tech inspect it for you. I see too many folks purchase a Viper for the first time and let the excitement overlook the importance of the pre- purchase inspection. When reality sets in, you may encounter several problems you didn't anticipate and the initial joy turns into resentment.

You can try Dan at Viper Specialty. He was repopping those last year at a reduced intro rate, but I think they've gone up since then. No matter how much they've gone up they'll still be less expensive than the Mopar ones.

The manuals are cheap; I got the powertrain diagnostic manual, the body diagnostic manual and the tech manual for my 1998 for around $40 on Ebay. If you have a jack that'll go low enough or access to a lift, the oil changes are easy (little harder on Gen. Is because of filter placement) and the air filters can be swapped in 5 minutes.

If you're willing to get dirty and realize that's it's just a car and not something sacred and untouchable, maintenance is pretty cheap. Even if you make a mistake and have to take it off to a pro, you'll learn a ton.

Gen 2 all the way! gen 1 cars are impractical, no windows or roof you always have to plan around the car if your going anywhere other than a cruise, plus the interiors are much better buy a 1996 up gts or a 1998 up rt

I will try to get a Gen II based off the information you guys have provided.

What are some of the best mods for keeping the car in best shape longevity wise? Like the lower thermo, I know for sure.

Also I don't plan on doing too many power mods,I want to get to learn the car first and get in the zone with it.

it's not huge but the newer cars have nicer steering columns, steering wheels, gauge clusters, and seat upholstery and inner door handles are nicer too! it's not a bentley but it's sure nicer than a busted ass gen 1 interior with the gauges that look like traffic lights! no offense to you gen 1 guys.
