Shipping big item....

What is the easiest way to ship an Autoform top and windows and who should I ship it through?

My plan was to contact Fed ex or UPS freight, wrap it all in bubblewrap and strap in on a pallet. Any ideas?

I want a tracking number and insurance.

Thanks,
John

If you can box it, you can ship it via ground with either service. A cheaper way is to do it thru Greyhound.

Thanks I will look into a box but don't know that I will find one big enough nor one that I will trust to keep it in good shape.

Greyhound would be the cheapest but I want to do tracking and insurance.

You have to build a wooden crate. They will fuck up a cardbord box and bust it all to hell.

Best way to do it would probably be to get a pallet (assuming top fits on one), frame it up making walls and use wood on the outside so it would be harder to damage. Would still want to wrap the top well inside of it though.

The box Autoform made for that added a few hundy to the price cuz it was made by a pro cabinet guy. You may try calling Steve up there to see what he used.

The other guys were right; to ship without breaking it needs to be framed up with 2x4s, then screw in plywood all around. The top originally came shipped attached to a metal frame that was bolted to the frame of the crate.

Cuz I'm a nerd, I took pics of how it came:

Good luck!

The only problem with going to a box that big is you are paying mostly for the weight of the wood to be delivered.

I will do it for my cost, I would need it to be on a pallet, crated and secure. If it isn't secure I don't want to do it, I don't want to be responsible for damage. When you are done crating it, I will need the weight and dimensions to get you a quote. Let me know.

I think I have meet you at the local viper meets. I have a twin brother who also has a viper...

I have to try and get it boxed and wrapped up tomorrow. The top is located in Isanti, about an hour north of the cities if it matters... Was thinking UPS freight as I have to have insurance and a tracking number... PM me if this is something you can do.

I could drive the car to the cities but it would be easier to crate it at my house.

Yup! UPS freight may be the cheapest way to go if it doesn't weight a whole lot. Let me know what they quote you.

If you could get a truck to run out I could do it through you. I have to try and box it up tonight. Only reason I was thinking UPS is because I think we have a distribution center in Isanti right off the train tracks. PM me your number.

Thanks,
John

I was wondering how much did it end up costing you to ship the hardtop as I'm trying to buy a used autoform hardtop and right now he's stating around $1K thru Fedex freight , a little too much if I do say so myself.

Anybody else shipped large items similar to hardtops, what's the reasonable rate and who would you recommend, fedex, ups, usps or others?

I moved it for John for $300.00, keep in mind that it didn't have to go very far so it was kinda cheap. Let me know if you want me to work something up for you. I would need it crated and secure in the crate to do it, I don't want to deal with anything getting damaged.

I believe it's coming from Texas to Utah, I'll get hold of the seller to make sure it's crated and secured and contact you for rate, appreciate it. Thanks!
