Trans issue. 96 GTS, no 2nd,4th or 6th

Searched for this one and although I'm fuzzy on my viper info I don't recall seeing this one come up before and was hoping someone could provide some insight.

Specs are:
96 GTS
Stock
11K miles

Went to go for a drive today, goes into 1st, 3rd, 5th and reverse fine. Car will not stay in 2nd, 4th, or 6th regarless if the car is moving or not and the gear is under load.

If you try and put the trans into 2nd at a standstill, it will pop back into neutral and the shifter will center itself. If I hold the shifter in 2nd, it will engage the gear and drive normally.

The car is never beaten on and was put away for the winter working 100%. This issue has surfaced now on the first attempted drive of the season.

Thanks. Here's a bonus pic of the winning Comp Coupe from todays WC GT race.

I had the same problem on my viper. The issue on my transmission was the delrin pads on the shift fork (2/4?) that centers the gear assembly. I ended up yanking the whole transmission out and tearing it down. Big job but the good news it was only about $8.00 in parts + fluid.

Have you got an aftermarket shifter on the car? That sounds like it's hitting a stop. 2,4,6 are all in the lower gates, so for all of them to have a simultaneous problem tells me there's something wrong with the shifter. Maybe one of the shift pins loosened up.

My first thought too... if it's an aftermarket shifter, the bolt may have loosened up a bit preventing the shifter from actually going into the shift gate.

Car is completely stock.

Is the only way to fix to drop the trans out?
