Idle rough on 1999 Dodge Viper. Low RPM as well.

Hi there.

I recently got a 1999 Viper and the idle is a littl rough and sits around the first white mark on the tachometer and seems a little low.

It really feels like it has a miss, but with new plugs and wires it seems a little better. When it is dead cold, it starts and idles much better.

Is this just the design of the camshaft?

Would appreciate any help or advice on a better forum or search or link to be read.

Thanks.

Re: Idle rough on 1999 Dodge Viper. Low RPM as well.

Hi there.

No check engine lite. What is the idle sensor? I know the idle bleed valve is on the front of the passegner side near the throttle body. Can the idle speed be adjusted?

Scott. What RPM does your car idle at and is it a little rough?

Thanks!

lol You're probably fine! I went from a 2001 to a '99, and I thought the same thing. It's just a really lumpy cam.

What is your idle? So the later cars idle better, huh?

Re: Idle rough on 1999 Dodge Viper. Low RPM as well.

yes the older ones do idle a little rough from the cam.My particular problem was an inconsistent idle.As I came to a stop it would idle high, around 1ooorpms,but if I tap-rev the gas it drops back down below 500.Sometimes it almost dies out,and very rarely it does.I checked my engine code and came up with a #24 code. That's how I knew how to fix it.Much thanx to Sean Roe who taught me how to read the codes and then gave me instructions on how to fix it,what a great group of guys he has working for him.

Re: Idle rough on 1999 Dodge Viper. Low RPM as well.

I used a Matco scanner on the engine OBDII port and got nothing. Was your light on in the dash? How did you test for the problem? Is it a blink code?

Nice to hear the info for these cars is available.

Any further imput appreciated.

Thanks!

Anything 96 and later is OBD II, codes should show on the scanner. The first mark above 0 is 500 RPM, the next is 750. When at idle, your needle should be just below 750(should idle at 700). The idle speed can be adjusted if necessary.

Is your battery fully charged? My car had almost the same symptoms when my battery was low.

Constantly rough or bouncy, almost stalling when you press on clutch?

Re: Idle rough on 1999 Dodge Viper. Low RPM as well.

If it almost stalls when clutch is depressed, here is a free fix to test. Remove IAC (passenger side near TB, tube goes to airbox). Two screws, then take it apart 2 screws. Clean everything with TB cleaner. Remove sensor in airbox and wipe with dry cloth. Remove intake tubes, prop open TBs and clean inside TBs making sure a ridge of carbon isn't stopping the TB's from snapping shut. Use old toothbrush.

any issues with having to sync throttle bodies after taking off IAC? I am getting ready to remove and clean mine. Is there a step by step for the removal of the IAC process? I am mechanically inclined, but Ive had nothing but carb american muscle, so this is all very new to me. This forum is great. Thank You
