I just got done signing my papers today for my first viper. It is a 94 rt/10. It will be delivered this coming Wednesday, and as you could expect, I am very excited.
Now for my question: Can anyone give me a list and recommendations for a cat back exhaust for the car? The car is completely stock, and I am just looking for an aftermarket cat back setup to improve the sound. The easier to install the better. I have done searches online, but mostly find systems for 96 and up. I want to know every type that is available for the sidepipe cars before I buy anything.
I am not concerned with power gains right now as i will need to get used to the car before adding more horses. I just know that I drove a Friends stock 95 and I was very disappointed with the sound of the stock system and want to make the car sound as bad as it is. i cannot have my Dad's Vette and Stang sounding better than my Viper!
I look forward to hearing back from anyone who can help. Thanks in advance.
You'll never get that deep rumble from the v-10 that you will get from a typical mustang, but you can give it a much meaner sound than the stock setup.
If you want it loud, you can do what I did on my old gen1, which was to cut out the stock muffler and cat, and replace with Sean Roe's high flow cats only. It was loud and had a good pop to it when slowing down. I didn't want to invest too much money into my old one, so for less than $300 it's a good option.
V8's have and will always sound the best, and it's a sound you won't get from a Viper. However, with the viper and correct exhaust upgrades it can sound unique and supercar-like. There's plenty of options out there even for Gen I's, but I don't know them all. On my '94 I have a TNT setup (headers, no cat, and TNT muffler). It's very different sounding from most other Vipers I hear, almost calm-like at low cruising rpm and then almost a exotic attention getter on full throttle (almost like a ricer car, but with power and throat behind the noise).
You could always get headers and run straight pipes all the way out, this will be louder than most anything you come across on the road (if you can bear it yourself).
Oh, and like Bad Asp said, take the cats off now! On a Gen I it's an easy mod and all it gives are benefits (better sound, slightly more horsepower, less side sill and interior heat, better mileage, etc)
Thanks for the info. I will talk with my friend who handles the aftermarket parts and see if he can come up with an idea. Straight pipes will be too loud, but we will definitely get rid of the cats as long as there is no adverse side effects.
Long tube headers
No cats
SLP loutmotuh resonator thats it
sounds like a freaking monster coming down the street.
The viper will never sound anything close to as cool as a big horsepower V8 car.
My 93 viper right now has belanger cat back exhaust with hi-flow cats.. its actually alot nicer then some of the other vipers i have heard. It got a more deep tone to it. I am picking up some belanger headers next week and not sure what kind of sound I will get then. Probably alot louder, but not sure in a good way. I will post when headers are on.
I just got my 94 RT/10 a month ago and hated the exhaust sound, took off the sides and replaced the stock mufflers with resonators, sounds awesome, and was cheap to do!
I installed 3" X 24" resonators with hi-flows and the sound is much better. I did notice some hp also after installing. I have extra set of 3" X 24" SS resonators at this time also.
