CHMSL 3rd Brake Light Wiring Splice Location

Hi there, have a new to me Gen 1 (1995) that I am fixing a few things on. 3rd brake light does not work. Only gives me 1.5 volts when brake pressed, I grounded to door striker and still only 1.5v so I suspect the hot wire has a bad connection somewhere.

I have the service manual, but wiring diagrams are greek to me. It seems it would splice to the drivers side brake light, but I can't locate the wires. Anyone know where the hot wire on the 3rd brake light runs to? Seems same fuse runs all 3 brake lights.

Backup lights don't work either, but that's another day

Thanks in advance for the help, got the rad fan working (temp sensor) and few cosmetic things fixed already! A/C is next - leaks out after about 2 weeks, just put in new schrader valves and doing a vac hold test tonight. If that doesn't work will replace the orings on the compressor. Great and fun cars!!!

I would need to look back at my '93 manual to check on Gen 1, but my '96 GTS manual has the splice diagrams pretty well laid out. Look toward the back of the W section for illustration pages vs circuit diagrams.

I have the diagrams, they don't specify where the splice actually is. It's supposed to be in the harness to the drivers tail light but I can't find it. I would like to know if someone actually knows where the wires are spliced in at.

It is likely a branch off the main harness to the tail lights and stereo amp. Coming from the engine compartment, it is the harness that runs along the top left of the trans tunnel. Most likely you will find it up behind the left rear wheel well liner.

Here are some shots from my 93 book. There is a major ground splice at Z1-5, with a branch to the CHMSL. The page says RIGHT rear wheelhouse.

Yes, we read that you do not understand the wiring diagrams.

Black to 9 wire ground splice, white/tan to brake lamp harness. It's a 2 wire plug on the right side of the deck lid.

The multi-wire ground splice has a 14ga Black lead going to a ring terminal stud on the RH rear frame rail. It could be either the upper or lower one. The ground wires probably go through a rubber grommet to the frame. You will just have to roll under there with a creeper and a flashilght to find it - all the wires are black.

Inside the trunk on the right side, you want to look around for a single plug with the two previously described wires (black, white/tan) running forward - probably near the hinge and up inside the right vertical of the Sport Cap. THAT is the one going to the CHMSL. I haven't looked inside an RT/10 trunk in AGES.

Now, it's time to get dirty and sweaty looking for the wires I've described. I'm about done with offering help to you on this one.

Thanks for all the "help." I have already done everything you suggested prior to posting. That's why I wanted to know exactly where the splice was, not a wild goose chase. Get all kinds on the Internet...

Gratitude goes a long way in this small Viper community. The dude who has been helping you JUST HAPPENS to be one of the best sources in a handful.

Mind your manners.

Wow if that's the best viper ally has to offer, should probably uninstall the internet.

I don't really care about your feelings, i'm just trying to fix a problem. Either help or gtfo. But just like my sex life, I'll do it myself anyway.

It's not GTS Dean's fault you can't read a wiring diagram or work on a car. If you don't appreciate the help... my advice is uninstall the internet and GTFO

LMAO! It's in the left rear wheel well, it's on the decklid, it's in the trunk behind a hinge. If I wanted guesses, I'd try out for wheel of fortune. It would be more helpful if GTS Dean would sit on the sidelines and let the adults talk.

Found the connector and splice. It's in the right rear fenderwell - have to take off the fender liner and get all up in there (not super easy with 3 large flange rivets holding it to the fender lip. I put in a splice and have lights now. Will post picture if I remember to take one before I button things up.

I call BULLSHIT on your ability to fix anything given your post and fucked-up attitude. Your only redeeming quality is that you...somehow and for who knows what reason...now own a Viper. God help us all if you start asking "what is the best oil to use"... You must be from Portland.
