GTS Tow: Does a Rollback need Ramps? AAA wouldn't reimburse full charge

QUESTION: Can a rollback load a Viper w/o "race" or "tow" ramps?

I have a Hennessey facia on my not lowered GTS with a 5" ground clearance at the front lip and the only way to get it on the truck was winching it up backwards w/the 2-piece ramps AND pieces of 2x8 wood.

The bill was $125 for 9 miles which included $45 for special equipment (ramps.)

AAA paid me $80.

WTF - they say they offer towing, not "basic" towing or "limited" towing.

I know for a fact Exotics need ramps and even more. So what does AAA offer?

Hagerty premium roadside is $179 a year and unlimited 150 mile tows (!) but that doesn't cover my daily driver(s).

For specialty sports cars, it's almost a given if they aren't wrecked at time of pickup. With your HMS fiberglass shovel nose, it's even MORE important.

Just to be clear, when you say "given" you mean rollback + ramps, right?

Frankly, if you own a towing service and have a roll back, how could not have have $450 ramps?

My tow guy has a sling that is like a Swiss army knife on the ends, probably 5 different types of hooks. He used a "hammerhead" to hook on to slots in the frame rails at the rear. Otherwise, it would have been a real problem to attach elsewhere. I was thinking of buying one of those Universal Slings just to keep in the trunk of the Viper just in case (but I'm not carrying ramps with me!)

Had my GTS (3 1/2 " front clearance) towed recently. Great flatbed with pan/tilt and used several 2x8 and so forth. $150 for a bout a 8 mile tow. American Classic Insurance (USAA underwrites) paid me $250...even though fee was $150. I guess I get pain and aguish reimbursement! $1000 a year agreed value coverage.

What is "pan/tilt?" The roll back is a flat bed that tilts and then "rolls" back.

How could he not have a couple of 8' 2x8s and some mid-span blocks underneath? Most likely response is people walk off with them and they are never there when needed.

One tow company had them and on another tow I made him go back and get them. Even when they were informed ahead of time.

No reason not to have a couple 2x8s. If somebody is stealing them drill a hole in them and lock them down.

AAA only promises what equipment the tow guy has. What a slipshod outfit.

Crazy new system. Not the normal roll back. Yes it rolls back to damn'd near flat but then he can tilt it left/right to compensate for uneven ground you can get when on the shoulder of a road. I thought he'd want to push the car forward to get to a more flat area but he simply tilted the entire bed so it was square to the nose of the Viper. Very impressed.

Had to get my lowered '02 towed on a rollback. The driver had plenty of lumber and AAA paid 100% of the bill. Towed me about 30 miles to my house.

I towed cars for 4 years back in the late 90s-early 00s, hence the user name. I wouldn’t have charged to load anything special. It would’ve been part of the tow.

That being said, is $45 gonna kill you if your car wasn’t damaged?

I've never had issues with AAA. I've only used them twice, for the Viper when breaking axles at the track.

I think the trick is, talk to the tow company before they dispatch, tell them what you have and you need 2x4s. When they arrive, tip them decent. It'll get filed as a regular tow.

AAA sometimes doesn't relay information to the tow. So you should ask AAA which company they're sending the request to, then call them directly with the added info.

THIS

I had my lowered 77 Vette towed 4 times, once for about 150 miles. The Viper once. I told AAA what cars I had when I called and told them they were lowered. I even used my AAA membership to have friends cars towed at no cost to either of us.

Just ask for a truck with a 2-piece flatbed. Depending on the model, some have completely level loading.

I've heard of the "ski jump" flat bed. "2-piece" is the proper term - thanks.

Is that end-piece articulated (adjustable angle?)

NOTE: The AAA tow driver told me about the "ski-jump" flat bed and they tried to find one. Don't know if they got AAA Dispatch trying to find one either.

I have had my Vipers towed probably 20 times with AAA and my Lambo towed 4 times and never once was charged anything. Every time they did a great job.

I just tell them that I require a flatbed and that is it. They don't have any special ramps. We just use 2x6 or 2x8 and stack them up and get it on there. Never scraped. Tow guys are always really nice and compliment the cars and how nice they are.

I, too, asked for a roll back and that is what the guy showed up with. No wood or ramps. My GTS has the Hennessey facia which makes it even worse - trying to winch from the front is almost impossible. My tow buddy who does low cars all the time, winched from rear with "hammer head" hooks that fit in some rear frame slots. Most tow guys don't even know what a "hammer head" is.
