2002 Viper GTS - Thoughts?

Looking to purchase a 2002 Viper GTS with roughly 33K miles. Any known issues with this model year? Anything specific I should be looking at/for?

Have always thought that the Vipers look great and am ready to have a different sports car that you don't see everyday.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

If you aren't sure whether you want a Viper or not, don't get one. Serious answer.

Never said that I don't want one or am on the fence about purchasing one and I am looking at purchasing one. Just wanted to see if there are any known things that I should be looking for prior to purchasing the one that I found.

Interesting that your thoughts towards a potentially new Viper owner that has some questions is if you haven't figured it out don't do it. Would expect that response from a Mustang Forum!

Dude, you sounded kinds wishy-washy in first post. If you really don't want one badly, you prolly aren't gonna be happy.
That being said, just have car checked by SOMEONE WHO KMOWS VIPERS. If it's been treated well, shouldn't have any issues. They are pretty much bullet proof.

Thanks! Not wishy-washy just trying to figure out what to keep a look out for when I go look at this one.

If you want a Viper 2002 is not a bad choice.
As with all GenI/II Vipers they do not have traction control, stab or any of the other nannies (except ABS on 01-02) and they are more difficult to drive than any other car.
Many complain about a crappy stereo.
Many complain about the cabin heat.
Many complain about the A/C.
Many complain about the interior.
Many complain about driver position.
Many complain about lack of a dead pedal.
Many complain about fit and finish.
Many complain about all the noises.
Nobody complains about the fun.

Appreciate those thoughts! I don't know too many race cars where people didn't complain about those things, lol. Having fun is what it is all about.

Do you know anything about the 2002 silver GTS with GTS-R spoiler that was at Streetside Tampa back in 2016?

Be sure to look up parts that are very scarce or not available to get an idea of possible future maintenance.

Silver is not a factory 2002 color so that could indicate a wreck. Is it silver or gray ?

Outside of the major drivetrain components that should just get the same inspection you would do for any other car here are some of the difficult and expensive things to check...

Check the panel gaps and alignment on the front clamshell...
Check to make sure the rubber is still on the rear part of the stanchion for the side windows.
Check that the doors stay open as there is a little stop that frequently breaks...
Get under the car and inspect every inch of it with a bright light for leaks, cracks, scrapes and the suspension bushings.
Check that the AC blows cold...

There appears to be excessive hood gap.
The badging is chrome.
Has typical poser mods - roof scoop, gas cap, wing, rocker panel cover, etc.
Has a fire extinguisher in the trunk.
Has pod gauges.
Has breather filter oil cap instead of the stock cap.
After market smooth tubes - the ones that don't have the bend.
Exhaust has been modified. Not sure of the brand but from the cat back it doesn't appear to be 3". Maybe, but can't tell for sure.
Front brakes are Brembo. Rears look stock but can't see for sure.
One-piece rotors slotted AND drilled.
There is some sort of device (solenoid maybe? Dunno) next to the #8 injector. Not normal whatever it is.

You listed many changes and "poser" mods from factory setup but didn't state whether these are good, bad, or indifferent. I know many people mod cars and some mods are good and some are bad. Curious the thoughts on these particular ones.

Strictly a wild guess here, but he would probably prefer to minimize the number of poser mods on his car.

Purely a personal opinion. I'm a Viper purist/extremist for whatever that's worth. I don't know what the asking price is but the list I posted are all negatives IMO (except exhaust). Doesn't mean the car isn't worth what they are asking, just means (to me anyway) that it would be worth more without most of the crap added.

Chrome badging and possible hood gap - might mean previous damage.
Pod gauges, fire extinguisher, oil breather and thingy near the injector - might mean some sort of power adder was on the car.
One-piece rotors means probably not too serious of racer (maybe that's good?)
As for the Brembos, I'd have to see the rears before I'd form an opinion.

Exhaust mod is no big deal either way.

With just pics to go by and no history of the car, my first guess (just a guess) is that it is a poser car. Run maybe a couple weekends at the dragstrip and probably never on a road course.

Without looking at it in person and without driving it I wouldn't want to guess on it's value.

Appreciate the further input.

There was a CarFax ordered and everything came back clean but I have been screwed by a large dealer in Ohio believing in the CarFax before. CarFax does not stand behind there report when there are discrepancies so to me any CarFax should be taken with a grain or two of salt!

My biggest concern in this particular vehicle is it was $59K at Streetside in 2016 and now 6K miles later it is below $40K private sale. That is a red flag to me as I do not believe at this point that Viper's have a depreciation value like this. The seller would also only give me the three year old professional Streetside pictures but would not give me any current pictures and only said that it is still in the pristine condition as the Streetside pictures.

There are probably too many red flags on this particular GTS which was why I was reaching out to the forum to begin with in case I am going to proceed and could make a more educated decision. Might be time to pull the plug and do some more Viper shopping!
