T56 6th gear noise

While cruising in 6th over to Daytona to watch the HSR races the T56 started intermittently making a bad noise. Kinda sounded like a whistle more than something mechanical but I'm 90% sure it was mechanical.

In the list of things that go wrong with these T56 trannies, which are the most frequent? My first guess is a synchro.

Synchros or the shift forks. Are you sure it was the trans? Could it have been a rear wheel bearing?

Are you sure it isn't low on oil?

synchro rings ride on the cone portion of the gears, to gently bind to the "free spinning" gear, to match speedds so the slider sleeves can engage the true gear. if a synchro is bad, often it will feel like a blocked shift, as you will have difficulty getting it into gear, or it grinds a little getting it into gear. once in gear, i donl;t think the synchro does anything else.

if you hear/feel a grinding while in gear, then it may be a bearing / bearing shaft issue, or the shifter fork is out of adjustment rubbing on the slider sleeves. if you manipulate the shifter, while in gear making the noise under load, and the sound changes, it may be an adjustment issue. if the sound doesn't change, then it may be a bearing / bearing shaft issue.

i guess make sure your oil is full. maybe switch to a slightly higher viscosity ? and give it a try ?

Bringing up older post.
t56 does have issue with 6th gear getting a bit loose(it is pressed on a shaft) that creates a whine in 6th gear. My 200k mile t56 in 89 Trans Am has that issue. Unless viper t56 was built significantly different, that would probably the case
