Why couldn't we have gotten useful door mirrors?

Electric mirrors can be adjusted so the outer edge can actually look down the side of the car which is OK for parking, but not driving.

Manual mirrors suck donkey balls. Totally.

But "how 'bout them" insane offset mirrors on all the hyper cars? What...? Are they towing a trailer? HaHa. But that is what you need for a proper mirror.

I suppose one of those tiny convex stick on's might help, but my eyes aren't that good.

A "extension" mirror - another mirror attached to existing mirror. Potentially being most ugly thing ever created? Who could resist?

NOTE: just looking for images, but do the later gen Viper mirrors solve this problem? They do look like they are on stalks, but still don't look like they stick out enough... Pagani and McLaren seem to have the most outrageous.

Side mirrors are for the blind spot. They work fine for me.

What Chuck said. Adjust the mirror so you just barely see the outer top side of the rear qpanel. If you can see your qpanel in the mirror, they are adjusted wrong.

For driving, the side mirrors should be adjusted so that the quarter panel is just out of sight - you have to move your head just a bit to see them. This gives maximum field of view of traffic when driving. When you parallel park, you move your head and sight down the side of the quarter panel where you can clearly see if it is coming close to hitting anything.

You cannot do this with stock Gen 1 & 2 manual mirrors. (With electric mirrors you can achieve these two functions HOWEVER you have to reposition the mirrors for close parking.)

Look at any hyper car and you will see what I'm talking about. There is a reason they have "wing" mirrors that hang out about 12 inches.

The VERY FIRST mod I did with both my Gen 1 and Gen 2 Vipers was to install a convex spot mirror on the driver's side. It's not that necessary for street driving, but once you put a 5-point harness in, you can't lean forward enough to cover all the required field of view. For the '99 model year, they put electric mirrors on the car as standard. In case you missed it - the Gen 1 Vipers didn't even have door handles on the outside of the car, and '92-'93 only had heater/defrosters from the factory. It was all about the most rudimentary, purist driving experience.

Maybe your seat position is different than mine. Do you have the seat reclined like driving through da 'hood or is it more upright?

My seat is upright.

The problem isn't "seeing the quarter panel" - that is easy.

The problem is sighting down the side of the car, parallel to the longitudinal axis. Only the outermost edge of the stock mirror can do this. When backing into stuff, you want to be sighting down the side just like you do with shooting or surveying.

Example: you are backing up straight and you are trying to drive between two other parked cars that are very close. To determine what clearance you have, you sight down both sides and it will be obvious.

Any truck driver will tell you you have to be able to sight down the side of your trailer to do any kind of parking or passing.

Really wish the passenger mirror would rotate down further for easier parallel parking.
