How to tell if lifters are stuck/bad?

I did a GG heads/cam build last year and put in brand new lifters. I've got a brutal clacking noise coming from the valve covers. I already replaced the baffles, but that didn't make an improvement.

I'm pulling the lifters this week, how can I diagnose them as good or not? Anything else that might be going on? When adjusting the rockers, I did a 3/4 turn past zero lash.

Are you running Gen 2 valve covers? If so, the rockers are likely hitting the sheet metal baffles in the tops of the covers. The options are to remove and hammer them for clearance, run spacers between the flange and head, or run Gen 3 valve covers, which are taller.

I removed the baffles and replaced with the JMB inserts
