Added 16 yrs old Son to Policy

So I just added by 16 yrs old son to my USAA policy (three other cars plus the Viper). Viper policy alone jumped to $3700 per year! WTF? USAA won't allow me to limit drivers or do any real customization regarding the Viper (no agreed upon value for instance). No way my son will ever drive the Viper, but USAA still gouges me since he's on the policy. Got a quote through Hagerty with agreed upon value, zero deductables and no real restrictions on driving for.....$1373 per year. Amazing. Plus much better coverage for the price and I get agreed upon value. I'm waiting for a quote from Grundy before I make a final decision. Four cars and four drivers with USAA was $8600 per year. No way I need the Viper costing $3700 with the highest deductables I can get. USAA needs to get their act together regarding specialty vehicles.

That's why I don't use USAA for the Viper. Call BJ for an agreed value policy, 877.545.2522

$1373 per year is bad enough. Anybody here remember the days when insurance was not mandatory? It also wasn't expensive.

I'm going on 30+ years with USAA, except for those years they dropped me over tickets. While I always had my Vipers insured by them, I know I could get better deals from some of the lessor places available, but the discounts that I got for multiple vehicles and on homeowners, etc kind of made up for a chunk of it. But the real reason I stayed was knowing that they are great to deal with when you have an accident.

What I hate about USAA (and probably others) is their policy of "3 strikes and your out for a year" where a strike can be a claim of any kind and tickets. Even if that claim didn't result in a pay out on their part, just the event trigger (or phone call) counts as a strike.

I'm 32+ year USAA member with home & auto and they have been a great company...but my loyalty can only go so far. I gots bills to pay and a kid going to college next fall! I did check with GEICO for all my other 'daily driver' cars and compared my USAA policy...less the Viper...with the GEICO quote. USAA came in $500 per year less than GEICO with very similar coverage. I'll stay with USAA for the three daily driver cars.

Screw Grundy...I got an email from DMV telling me I didn't have insurance on my Viper. I called Grundy and they said they sent 2 letters to my home, telling me that it was going to expire. So, they dropped me. I never received any letters. I owed DMV $150 in fines.
They asked if I want to sign back up with them. I ended up with Erie insurance, with everything else I insure. Added like $380 to my policy.
Hagarty would be my second choice @ $1200, with agreed value.

I'm not clear, do you have to pay a give a BJ, or pay and get a BJ?. Important difference.

Why does the DVM care if you have insurance? I had a car I put on storage insurance only and let the registration sticker expire. When I put insurance back on I got emission checked (they stopped that now) and paid for a new sticker for the year. No additional fines. Also no use tax on cars there. All cars have same yearly sticker fee no matter on FMV.

I have USAA for 20 years now....5 vehicles 2 of which are Vipers. When I added my 16 year old daughter and had three cars they put her as the driver of one the ACR (highest value). I got her a used Civic a few months ago. Oddly enough, when I added the Civic for her....my premiums dropped a lot for the 4 cars especially the Vipers which I was shocked about. It costs me $1,700 to insure her and the civic. I have to move the Vipers to Grundy for agreed value soon. USAA gives me grief about it, somehow affecting my umbrella policy.

Before I sold my 96 GTS last December, I used American Modern insurance, with agreed value of $55k, for $540/yr. Seems like they allowed 3k miles and pleasure use only.

Forgot to mention, I too had my 16yo son on my main auto policy, and I think he was listed on the separate Viper policy.

I bounce between Geico and Progressive every other cycle with my cars and home insurance. It keeps rates low, so I thought ($1600/yr for 4 cars Viper/NSX/SRT4/Fiesta). But damn, some of you have crazy low rates. I'm going to have to start looking at collector car insurance or agreed value. No way I put on 3k miles between the Viper or NSX.

I live in Maryland. If you still have tags and you are one day without insurance, you get a Fine. $150 for the first 30 days and $7 per day afterwards. Got to pay for the lazy people and illegals in Baltimore somehow!

5000 mile per year ceiling. Can't be a daily driver, park in secured garage, have to attest you have another daily driver car, can't be used for work, etcetera. I had the office review the policy and it seems to fit my needs perfectly. In fact, several others are looking into collector car policies as well since they had never considered it before. I love USAA's personal service and how they bend over backwards to take care of their customers, but I can't rationally keep that Viper policy with them.

Update. I just received a DECLINED coverage application from Grundy....I guess I have a less than stellar insurance history when you combine all the drivers on my policy with the various bumps and bruises we've accumulated over the years. I find it interesting that they indicated "undisclosed losses" as one of their rationals for denial. I wonder what that was? Oh well. I'll try Hagerty now and see what they determine.
