Exclamation Question about Tranny/Shifter

My 2002 Rt10 shifter moves up when i'm on the gas in 5th gear and moves down when I let off. It doesn't jump out of gear, thou. Googled symptoms ,stated shifter bushings may be worn out. Searched for bushings but cannot find, Does our transmissions have shifter bushings? If so anyone know where to buy and do they make better aftermarket ones. Seen some Honda bushings that were metal and would withstand the heat better.

I'd use the Honda bushings.

And it can't go in the military now.

And the government won't pay for the shift.

I doubt the bushing is your issue but it uses the typical T56 bushing; OEM is plastic and there are aftermarket bronze offerings if so inclined. They are held in place pretty securely in my experience so try to use an upside down bolt or something similar to extract it and make sure that, in the event it shatters, you don't leave any pieces behind.

Is this only happening in fifth gear?

Sorry it took so long to reply. Work and stuff.Six gear will not engage now, 5th pops out. Got tranny mount in and install, changed fluid while I was down there. No help, but the mount was cracked. Didn't change the motor mounts. I don't have the equipment , i feel I need to do it. Removed the transmission cover and drove down the road. Transmission doesn't move, if the motor mounts where bad, wouldn't the tranny be lunging forward and backwards? Looking for someone that has a lift so I can change motor mounts.

The motor mounts are relatively easy to replace probably takes about 20 minutes per side all you need to do is put a floor jack underneath the oil pan with a two-by-four in between it jack up the motor just slightly get in there two bolts later on each side and you've got new motor mounts.

If it pops out of 5th and wont go in 6th its not the mounts causing that. Internal trans issue.

If the motor mounts are bad it should rock side to side as described in your first post, as the engine moves from torque or decel.

Could be in the shifter bushing as originally thought, but I am not familiar with the shifter on our transmissions enough to guide you.

I took a few minutes to look at the parts diagrams today. The diagram for the shifter is worthless, however the shift forks have pads on them that could wear. These are the pads where the forks slide on the synchros. On most transmissions if you take the shifter off the tower you can look down in there and see if the pads are intact. Again I warn you I am not familiar with our perticular transmissions. I also have not looked at mine to see if you can even get to the tower bolts from inside the car. If not the trans would have to come out anyway. I can tell you it is very easy to remove the trans if you have the equipment to do so. I have a lift and a high lift trans jack and its easier for me to remove the trans than mess with the alternatives, however others may not be so fortunate.

That would have to be one fucked up shifter bushing to cause that. And if you decide to pull the shifter off to replace the bushing, put an IPSCO shifter on. It's like getting a new car.

Regarding the mounts it's very likely your motor mounts are shot esp if your tranny mount was broken. When I did my mounts the motor mounts literally fell into pieces but the tranny mount was good. So yes, motor mounts should be a priority for you.

One of the symptoms I had before changing the mounts and shifter was the car would pop out of gear as I would accelerate from a stop light. Can't remember which parts made the most impact - mounts or new shifter - but the problem was solved. Haven't had to look at it since. Now 10 years ago.

My plastic shifter cup (bushing) was worn right out last year. My symptoms were loss of 5th gear (there was nothing when shifting to 5th, it felt empty) and getting into reverse was always a bitch unless the car was turned off. I upgraded it to the brass fitting and both issues were solved. Different problem from yours but figured I'd share the info anyway.

Sorry for the late post, been working a lot of overtime. Tranny out, engine mounts suppose to arrive today, still working on getting the old ones out.Got poly ones from PolyBushings.com. If this doesn't work , will be getting a rebuild. Anybody know anything about Tick Performance? Thinking of shipping it there for a stage 2 rebuild.

I had an F-body box built by Tick and was pleased with the turnaround time and the work they did; seemed like a very professionally run shop.

You will need to Jack the motor up a bit more than the OEM mounts require. The bolts on the polybushings are a tad longer.
