Side sills tight fitting after new exhaust

I installed the BB cat back exhaust on my 02 ACR today and got everything lined up, fitting, etc. When putting the side sills back on, the mufflers are touching the inside heat shield and I have to lean against the sill to get the holes to line up. Is it normal to be this tight fitting or, should the muffler be suspended in the middle of the sill with air all around between the side muffler and the heat shield?

What is the diameter of the muffler can? 4 - 5 inches fits pretty easily. 6 will be very snug.

I remember it being tight on my 99. I had to push the sill in also. 3" pipe and the muffler is probably 5 or 6" round.

Just measured the mufflers, they're abou 5.25" diameter. I have no signs of melting paint now and assume this isn't moving the cat any closer to the heat shield. Any concerns this may lead to be feared bubbling of paint if the muffler is touching?

Unlikely. But add some sill vents anyway. They are a good thing to have regardless.
