What do you wish you knew before you bought?

Hi everyone! I'm new to the site and will hopefully join the owners club sometime soon. So, I have a question for everyone that owns a viper. What are things you wish you knew or would have done differently when you bought your viper. Are there specific issues to watch out for or high cost maintenance intervals that people dump there cars at? Also, what are some fun things to watch out for, like special options, dealer packages, etc, to watch out for. I'm specifically looking at the 96-02 GTS. I don't expect you to pick my car out for me, just help me be more informed. Any input is appreciated!

Thanks!

I wish I knew the car was held together with shims that get loose and fallout.

I wish I knew how little the aftermarket really was/is for these cars.

I wish I knew how difficult it was to realign the headlights/fascia/hood. As well as how often it needs to happen.

I wish I knew how little even seasoned mechanics know about these cars.

All that said, I love my GTS.

I highly doubt that I will boost the car. I will probably leave it with intake, exhaust, heads and cam. I'm guessing your statement stems from the 96-99 vs 00-02 engines?

What do you mean by realigning the headlights/fascia/hood? I didn't know about that, i'll have to look into this...

Edit: Good to know, i just thought all these cars had been in a fender bender...How often do you need to do this?

Stocker? I wish I would have replaced the muffler with an H pipe the day after I got it. Instead I waited a few years to sort through all options. Options that never end mind you, so delete the muffler first.

I would decide what mods/options you want your car to have and find someone who has already done it. It will save you time and you will get those mods for pennies on the dollar.

Yeah, don't buy a bone stock car and butcher it. You'll dump a bunch in and sell it for less than you paid with these kind of becoming collectors.

If you want heads/cam/etc then try to find a car with those options already on it... shouldn't be too hard if you are patient.

I wish I would have bought a Blue/White stripe :'( The union workers paid special attention to that color combo and took extra care on the assembly line building them.

This is true, except I like to do the work myself. I just don't trust other people's work.
If you are going to pay to upgrade buy it already done.

I never had to realign the headlights/fascia/hood in 6 years of Gen II GTS ownership from 17k mi to 50k mi. I found the car easy to work on and a pretty uncomplicated car. The only problematic issue can be an older Viper's aged cooling system, especially if you live in a HOT climate.

Honda Civics are cheap to repair because there's a million of them.

Vipers, not so much.

Short of the ACR there are no "special options," or "dealer packages" either. They pretty much all came one way.

Other than that, I wish I knew this chick was going to offer to stick her pinky in my ass. Different subject. But still viper related.
