This is fantastic! You should really sell covers, I'm sure a lot of people would buy one, probably buy the whole setup. What does the cost of the CF run??

Removing the carpet takes off 17lbs. He is also making it more servicable. I never put my carpet back in either.

Taking the carpet out makes it more serviceable. Replacing it with dress-up parts does not.

I've had my rear carpet out for about a year now and am putting it back in this weekend. Tired of the noise.

Sure you wanna do that? Your 1/4 times will suffer by about 0.0002 of a second.

ZZ what kind of printer and software are you using? I want to buy one but the tech is moving so fast I'm never know what the best choice would be.

This one is pretty involved so I don't know if it's the best option to sell. I could definitely do it, but probably not worth my time puttting it together in a "kit" format.

I am working on some other stuff for us Gen 2 guys that I will sell if their is interest. If not, no skin off my back. I like doing it but I think there's a few cool things I could make pretty easily to spruce our interiors up a bit.

Not true. Replacing it with dress-up parts that allow serviceability. As far as weight is concerned, my new stuff is definitely not 17 lbs, but I doubt i'm saving much more than 5-7 lbs at most. I'm interested to see if the carpet was a serious noise damper. My car is loud as crap already so I doubt I'll notice.

Tell me about it. I've had this printer for about 1.5 years, and it's already 3 models behind. It's an Airwolf 3D HD. The good news is, Airwolf makes all their models upgradeable so I can easily buy the new features of the newer models and make mine equivalent.

For modeling software, I use CREO 2. I'm an engineer so that's just what I'm used to using at work, so it's available to me and I'm proficient at it. As far as preparing it for 3d printing, I use a couple other programs to make sure the mesh is printable and to convert to G-code.

If you want to see some more of my 3D printing stuff on the car, check out my build thread from last winter!

So after you drilled out the factory rivets on the factory cover and put screws in, your new dress-up cover with it's screws will be easier to get to err easier to service? Versus deleting the carpet and leaving the factory cover? I have the carpet out with the factory cover (screws) and it is super easy to work on. Can't imagine any cover with screws too, being easier to service.

However, regarding the OEM carpet, I am going to put mine back in and cover the cover. My car is very loud too, but the rear carpet makes a big difference.

When comparing OEM (carpet in place) to my solution, it is completely serviceable while not looking like.... well, a trunk with the carpet removed

That's the entire point of this project. Maintain serviceability without making the trunk look unfinished, and possibly even better than the bland OEM carpet.

I've considered putting in some sound deadening on the top under the carbon fiber... but that would just add more weight, and I'm kinda building this car to be a half-mile/mile car so I really don't want to add unnecessary weight.

My comment, stating taking the carpet out accomplishes ease of access.

Your comment stating that it is the installation of dress up parts, not removal of the factory carpet, that allows access.

Which has nothing to do with you claiming simply removing the carpet is not an access enhancement, which is what I said is; it is entirely that lol.

Sure, removing it is an access enhancement.

You should keep your hood off for easier future oil changes too.
