RT/10 or GTS??

So I'm going in the Army in a few months and won't really have a whole lot to spend my money on. I calculated that if I can put about $700-800 every month into savings, I should have enough (around $35,000) to buy my dream car; the one and only, Viper. I've been doing my research on both generations, first and second, and haven't come to a decision on what I want based my concern with their lack of stability control and ABS. So I guess my question is, would it be better to buy a Gen 1 RT/10 for around $25,000 and use the spare 10,000 for upgrades (like adding in ABS) or should I just spend it all to find a nice GTS and whatever comes with it?? I'd like to use the car for what it's made for and get the best (affordable) performance I can.

I went through this same situation that you're going through right now and I'll summarize what everyone told me.

First thing you need to decide is Generation I vs Generation II. Although the Generation I's will likely be cheaper than the Generation II, there are primary reasons for that. You will hear it many times, spend the money for the Generation II.

Second thing is the RT/10 and GTS are the same car in two different body styles. Choose the one you like and go with it. Where are you located? For me, being in California, I'm only going to drive the Viper during sunny days. With that said, I would love to go topless, which is what drew me to the RT/10. After seeing the GTS and driving the GTS in person though...I can see why everyone wants a GTS.

Go Gen II with either one. Nothing beats driving with the top down on a nice day with the RT, but the GTS sure does look a better. Get either and you won't be disappointed.

ABS is not really a normal add-on. Either buy the car with it, or do without. I bought my '01 with, for that reason.

...personal preference. I wanted an RT/10 so I have an RT/10. I also went around and around about GEN I vs GEN II...after much research...GEN II was the clear winner...ABS, power windows, more HP, cooler hood, etc.

ABS is overrated. A big brake kit will give you plenty of stopping ability. Never once in 7 years of ownership have i needed ABS or accidentally locked up my brakes.

I guess if you are accident prone this might be a necessary option. Forged internals >ABS to me.

GTS... Chicks dig the GTS

But definitely go GEN II. Forged motors up till 99. You can't really retro fit the ABS. Well you could but it really would be pricey.

If you want ABS... go buy a Corvette.

If your car doesn't try to break traction under braking you drive like a pussy. So if you don't need ABS, get a GM.

So the general census seems to be a 2nd Gen GTS. Anyone know how much decent brake kits costs? Also, I read on another thread that the 3rd Gen brake work good to throw on one of the earlier generation Vipers. ???

There are many varieties of brake upgrades from musical calipers / rotors to entire system installs. Decide how much you can spend, and then find out what fits your budget. Entire systems are gonna be $3k+

I went GTS because I don't want to sit in the 100+ degree summer sun. Only you can decide if you want the top open or not. But go with a Gen2.

On another note buying a viper at an early age is one of the dumbest financial choices you can make unless you are pulling in a really good income. But then again you are only young once so might as well blow all your money on cars, beer, and women.

Same thing I was going to say haha. I know so many kids who blew all their Army money, and are now living with mom/dad.

My advice is to save your money, use it as a deposit on a house, start a business, or invest into something. Then when spending $35k-$45k is no hair off your back, buy a Viper

Yeah, yeah, yeah hahahaha. Who knows how much long I'll be around, or any of us for that matter. I'm buying a Viper haha. I'll be an Infantry Ranger, so deployment will be pretty often. That means un-taxed pay and nothing to spend it on in the desert. So a Gen 2 would fall under 1998 to 2002, right??

Going in on the enlisted side? Good luck saving that much a month. I was a cheap ass and the most I could save was about 300-400 a month.

Get a GTS.

The 700 a month was kinda just an average including hazardous duty pay for Airborn and pay increases for promotions over the course of my first 4 years. But I think you guys are right, I should just blow 35k after saving up for 4 years on a Viper. I'm checking out some Z06s now. Maybe a 350z or BMW M3... Choices

Haz pay is only $150 a month for Airborne. Get a beater and save up your money until you get BAH and can live off post. Barracks parking lots are horrible and I'm sure you have that one asshole who will fuck with your car. Good luck with your endevour and thanks for signing up to serve.
