Viper what I'm looking for?

Hello All!

I wanted to post because I'm going through that "car phase" where I'm trying to find a weekend driver.

I've had a decent history of cars in the 11 years I've been driving but this is the first time I'm "clueless" on what cars to look at. Here has been my car history for the past 11 years:

First Car: 1996 Chevy Blazer - Sold to get RX8
Second Car: 2004 Mazda RX8 - Totaled
Third Car: 1994 Mazda RX7 - Stock twins with bolt ons - 330rwhp - Sold to get GTO
Fourth Car: 2005 Pontiac GTO - Full headers/cam/exhaust - 423rwhp/300rwtq - Sold to get Audi S4 and RX7

First Pairing of Cars
(Daily) 2000 Audi S4 - Stage 3 K04 Turbos - 373awhp/400awtq - Sold to get GTO and Miatas
(Weekend) 1994 Mazda RX7 - GT35 Single Turbo - 405rwhp - Sold to get GTO and Miatas

Second Pairing of Cars
(Daily) 2005 Pontiac GTO - Headers/exhaust - Probably around 370rwhp - Sold to get Mazdaspeed3
(Daily) 2000 Mazda Miata - Just suspension - Sold and haven't used money
(Track) 1990 Turbo Mazda Miata - Sold and haven't used money

2012 Mazdaspeed3 - Stage 1

Basically, I was looking in the $25-$30k range for a nice weekend driver. I want something that is going to be fun to drive, reliable and something I can work on. It won't be a daily, but I'll probably drive it 2-3 times a week.

I've currently been intrigued by the following (which is all over) but I'm really looking for a torque monster:
Tial 770 Audi S4 - 600awhp+
e46 M3 with HPF kit
Turbo Honda S2000
APS TT 350Z
67-69 Camaro
Viper
2003-2004 Cobra

I wanted to know what your thoughts are (I know you're biased) on if the Viper would fit my needs. I hear about how raw the car is but honestly, I don't think it can compare to one of my FDs that I had. I think with my price range, I'm only looking into the 1st gen models.

FYI the only head turner in that group is a Viper. Unless you hang out at asian tuner meets then the S2000 will do.

I've never met anyone who "wasn't sure" if they wanted a Viper. Most owners KNOW they want one and they know why. And most guys who don't know if a Viper is what they want, end up not owning one.

I've wanted one since I got my driver's license in 1993. Had one for over 10 years. And I can't imagine another car that does what it does for the price. Then factor in ease/cost of maintenance, aftermarket support, exclusivity...it's a no brainer.

I found a 94 with 40k miles on it.

Motor looks to be stock but suspension, wheels and brakes are modified. I noticed that the front doesn't have the Viper badge. Either the owner shaved it or the car has been in an accident before?

Any thoughts on what this car should be worth?

If you're not 100% sold, the GTS probably isn't for you. Only one way to know though-test drive. I thought I wanted a C6 Z06 since I was in college. I finally went to test drive one, checkbook in hand. Hated it.

Drove the G3 Viper, a bit too small inside for me. Went to look at a GTS, sold instantly. Bought it that day.

The paint looks to be in great condition...maybe has been repainted. The badging has been messed with. There should be a Sneaky Pete emblem on the front fascia, just below the hood, like there is on the trunk lid. The bumper should have 'Dodge' on the left side and 'Viper RT/10' on the right side. Both sides of the hood should have 'Viper RT/10' badging. The original A/C knobs were black so it has aftermarket knobs and the stereo appears to be aftermarket. The door sill plates are aftermarket. The wheels and brakes are aftermarket. There are smooth tubes installed in the air intake to the throttle bodies. All good upgrades.

Buy the "Viper Buyer's Guide" by Maurice Liang if you're really interested in shopping for a GEN I or II (it also has some info on GEN IIIs).

The GEN Is are the most raw. Power windows in the GTS started in 1996, 1997 for the RT/10. ABS started in 2001.

What are we looking at price wise if you were to make an offer on what we know of that car. I'd run a VIN check before I even make any offer. I noticed the badges and some other body cues missing which to me means body work has been done and potentially an accident.

I'd say mid 20's on that car would be a good deal.

I've been searching all around the country to see what kind of price range these cars are in and here is a sample size of a few cars.

The criteria was based upon a 20-30K price range, black and clean:

I'm unable to post URLs until 15 posts or more but if you google "craigslist #ofad" it should give you the ad I'm talking about:

4364773425 - Cheapest and looks very clean.
4346284505 - Clean but don't like tan interior
4366986513 - Like the matte black but don't like the rear exit exhaust
4340085557 - Expensive compared to the others and not really liking the color combo.

With that said, those cars were practically all stock and ranging in the $24-$25k price range. That basically means the owner is looking at a $4k premium with his car.

There is no middle ground with a Viper. There is no multi-purpose with a Viper. It is demanding to drive because you get so much feedback and is a throwback to yesteryear with a mere fuel injection dressing to make you think this is a modern machine. I love this about the car. Too many cars these days try to be too many things. 600hp Cadillacs with 20 speaker sound systems and the like. It's great having a car that is so focused in its pursuit of its purpose. Just make sure that is what you want

It all comes down to what you want to do with the car.

03-04 cobras are a cheaters car. They are so easy to make big power and so cheap to find parts. Mustangs are great too because there are so many "mustang" or "Ford only" events, shows and weekends.

But like Dave66 said there is no head turner like a viper. I love my mustang but I have as much money in it as a brand new gen5 and this Gen1 viper gets more looks and wows. I'm the same way mustangs, Camaros and vettes can drive by me, but a viper it makes my neck snap.

You claim you want a torque monster right? Then why you do have listed a bunch of torqueless cars lol. A honda, Audi, Nissan? Even turbod they wonder really make shit. None of those cars will make more torque than a viper in stock form. And even if you built you a bad ass Audi (which is very expensive to build and maintain) or a honda (like a neon you're still gay) all anyone has to do is add a shot to the viper and its all over
.
Cobras are awesome but still arent torque monsters. The camaro to would be with a big block. But not to be found everywhere. Not a clean one for cheap.

Driving a viper is a whole new world. Get a gen 2. You'll enjoy it more. Add a few grand to your price range and ill sell you a blown viper.

I wouldn't call a cobra anywhere near torqueless. I was 700rwhp/720rwtq....I'd say that's pretty damn decent torque. the vipers numbers usually stay pretty close torque to hp wise unless you run giggle juice which is a torque creating animal, but it's usually that way with any nitrous application.

This!

If your topping out @ $30k. A viper isn't for you. You wouldn't be able to afford the upgrades much less a nice (non abused) Viper.

A Viper is a great car and definitely a head turner and by no means a "lemon", but they do take $$ to keep right. Even "small" maintenance items (tires, brakes, ect.) all cost more for a Viper. So if 30K is your limit, as Disturbed bput it, I'd look elsewhere.

Thanks for the feedback all.

- Why would you guys take a GenII over a GenI?
- Maintenance costs don't worry me as I've owned European cars. I doubt the cost of ownership is going to be anything more than that. What type of money are we looking at for maintenance and cost of mods?
I'm estimating tires are going to be about $200 a tire.
Oil change $100
Set of headers we are looking at $2k
Set of catback exhaust $1k
- The Cobra is a great car and like someone said, makes stupid power for cheap, but in all honesty, I'd rather have a bone stock Viper in comparison to a KB or Whippled Cobra for the same price. In the end, its "still a Mustang" and I don't think there would be that sense of "pride" in owning a piece of history every time you drive like you would feel in a Viper

tires only 200$ lol. even stock tires and cheapos at that are up there. figure somewhere around 1600+ for a good set of tires all around. hell I can't even put tires on my daily pickup for 200$ a piece.

gen 1 vs gen 2. no GTS option in 1. likely no AC on gen 1. no windows on gen1, not as much power, better motors and cams in the gen II, gen II is more modable, wheels on gen 1's suck worse than the wheels on a gen 2.

if you want to put a nice set of wheels on the gen 2 figure at least 2-3k at a minimum. thats without tires. oil change is close enough, stereo sucks balls in all vipers period. for a set of heads you are looking at 4-5k on the cheap side. brakes are more expensive than you might think on these things as brakes suck on gen 1 and 2.....so much so that the vipers are legendary for their lack luster braking. want to put a set of big brakes on it, figure about 4-6k. don't do your own work, and prepare to take it up the ass with no lube for labor rates because it's a viper, if they do it right at all. gen iis have better cooling system I believe. gen iis have a better intake manifold, I believe the heads are better, cam is better, internals are better. I'm sure there is more that others will outline with more detail.
