This happened when changing oil

Just have to share.. just pissed and embarrassed..

So, went ahead with changing my oil. A little drive, drained, filter off, new filter in, drain plug back, filled it up, checked the level, started it up..

Heard something "swishy-type" noise so killed it almost right away, went around and found oil EVERYWHERE! Must have been 6-7 quarts under the car!!

Reason:
The rubber gasket from the old oil filter got stuck on the filter housing (which I didn't noticed because I'm an arrogant dumbass!!) so when I mounted the new filter on, the old gasket got tweaked, didn't create a seal, and oil poured out...

2 bags of kitty litter, 8 quarts of oil, and an hour later, things were done..

At least that was a common mistake that weve all done lol. The dealership forgot to tighten my oil filter when they did mine which caused a river in my driveway. Needless to say things often get done right when done yourself

same thing happened when we were trying to change the oil filter on my buddies boat. Except the seal was keeping the threads from getting started. We must have gone and bought 4 different filters before we realized what was wrong. We just couldnt figure out why the old filter would screw back on and the new one wouldnt. All you can do is laugh at yourself at that point. At least you didnt drive down the road with it like that!

The only reason I have never done that is because I was taught at an early age to always check!!!!

I got my first American car (a 73 Camaro) when I lived in England. Since it had an engine 3 times the displacement of anything I'd ever owned it would need more oil than a 1600cc motor, right? So I wasn't surprised when nothing showed on the dipstick after I put in a gallon of Castrol. Yes, I realize I am a useless git. I was a little surprised when another gallon only just registered. Two miles down the road I heard a nasty ticking sound and saw plumes of white smoke behind me, courtesy of a blown lifter. Who knew it had the wrong dipstick in it?

I always wipe off where the seal seats on the engine to make sure this doesn't happen. I learned a long time ago when the same thing happened to me. My dad told me it is good practice to wipe the seal surface down to make sure there is not a gasket stuck there. Glad you caught it in time!

Thanks, pretty vain but I feel a tad better knowing it's not completely uncommon..

With that said.. the reason I changed oil was to increase my changes to pass smog. Just came back and my HC was too high at 15 mph..
I also added two bottle of HEET in there to no prevail..

I'll change plugs and wires as a next step.
If that doesn't work I'll have the cats changed plus a new tune when getting my new (ported) heads and manifold installed..

Fing hate CA's tree-hugging CARB bs!!
