1995 RT/10 - History of my Car and Myself

Well, since I've basically been leeching this forum dry for all sorts of info about my Viper, pre- and post-purchase, I wanted to provide something that may actually be fun to read. (Skip to pics if you don't want to hear my lame story!! haha)

Let's start....in 1992 I was 9 years old. I was sort of into cars at the time, but what was the point? My parents were well off, but it's not like when I turned 16 I was going to be driving my dream car, a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4, let alone my ultimate dream car, a Dodge Viper. I was pretty athletic...I play football, hockey, baseball, etc...but then I was a super nerd, too. Painted airplanes and wargaming figures, played D&D, and spent the rest of my life on my computer.

So, I went to high school, slacked off, somehow got into college. Went to college at Northern Illinois, slacked off, went back to community college. Turned it around, started doing better in school and completed about every computer course available at community college. Never got a degree of any kind, but somehow fell into a job as an IT administrator, and it was all uphill from there.

I'm quick to learn when I want to and I'm very mechanically adept. Once I had the money, I snatched up a 3000GT. A non-turbo. Whoops. 5 months later I bought another, a twin turbo VR-4. When I bought the VR-4 (in 2007) I did everything I could to that car. Swapped the engine/trans, installed all Apex'i electronics, installed new turbos, Brembo brakes, front mount intercooler, did body work, disassembled the damn thing and fully painted it. I learned a lot, all self-taught, with help from my dad (quite a bit). I just lived my life in car forums and YouTube, teaching myself how to do all this. Thank God for the internet. Here are some pics of the painted and finished 3000GT.

(Just keep in mind, when I bought the VR-4, I couldn't drive a stick, someone had to drive it home for me. I also couldn't even change a spare tire, I've come a long way, lol)

My dad built me a powdercoating oven, because I wanted to get into powdercoating. Haven't used it much, yet, but it's 6' x 3' x 2'

So...enough about me...see next post for the Viper...

My 1995 was wrecked sometime in 1998-9.

The only pics I have of the repair are crappy inkjet printouts that got wet and ruined.

The pics below show the repair process. Frame WAS damaged, but was repaired, as you can see. Hood was apparently not damage, I don't see it in the list. The bumper is a reman bumper. Rack and pinion replaced, CenterForce clutch and new slave cylinder installed.

Brakes, cams, short throw shifter, piggyback and tuning....

Pic of tuning chip / piggy back here, but I need to remove owner's contact info from sheet.

...and now for some numbers...

488 rwhp, 527 "tork" without help. The original owner used a bit of nitrous to come in 3rd place in his club's dyno day event, pushing 574 hp 621 trq.

And how it looks now...

Car currently has 36,000 miles and will be driven as much as possible, like it deserves.

Nice write up, for a second I thought you had turbo'd it with the long intake piping that would come from a footwell or side mounted twin turbo setup.
Then again, you could always make the jump to becoming a Gen1 TT owner, a very rare breed.

I'd honestly like to turbo, supercharge, or twin-charge it.

I think that going with a head upgrade would be the first logical step, though.

I'm somewhat familiar with tuning...but I'm not keen on blowing up a V10 that I just got. Head gasket was replaced in 1999 with all this work that is shown...but who knows if they used a steel one or a crappy paper one.

I'll get some vids up, pronto.

Let me know if those vids work, guys. I cleaned the IAC, it was FILTHY. Tonight I'm cleaning throttle bodies. Probably the cause for it dying at idle on occasion.

My friend is driving it, and that was with the filthy IAC, had to constantly rev it. Part of the reason the guy sold it. He didn't want to dig into it at all and even attempt simple fixes. Part of the reason for the low price, too. Yay me.

To cut right to the chase, when everything is sorted out (including updating your valve-train to handle the boost) you'd want to go with a pair of T4 sized turbo's on the hotside to provide a nice torque curve with a wider powerband that pulls strong and consistent up top over the smaller T3 sized units.

Definitely check to see if the gaskets used in the '99 work were paper or metal and if paper I would go head and have them switched out anyways to prevent and blowouts if you decide to add forced induction of any kind.

Here's Andy Mac's complete Gen1 ('95) TT build with updates and pics.

Awesome :-)

T4, sheesh, those are basically legendary high-HP manifolds on the 3000GT's. The 8 litre Viper engine probably wouldn't even realize they were there and get instant spool time I bet.

How does the idle sound? My brother said it sounded like "a bag of crap", but I sense some jealousy.

Vid links in post #11 for anyone that missed them. I am not taking the time at work to figure out how to download the vids from Facebook then re-upload to YouTube, but the links should work.

I was going to ask about the heads. Kinda weird to do all that work and not do them, but maybe they ran out of money. I think you can tell what Head Gaskets are on there by looking at where the head/block meet.

Thanks for sharing, nice looking snake and take it easy until you get use to it.

Yeah...

I gave the original owner a call (not previous owner) to ask about the upgrades. I left my # so he can call me back. I hope he does.

Perchance I will get an early start to my mid-life crisis next month with a supercharger. I turn 30 on Oct 16.

Any and all input appreciated. Obviously have a ton of research to do, though.
